Summary
Zack Snyder’sArmy of the Deadfranchise has been reportedly cancelled at Netflix, with seemingly no plans for the franchise to continue beyond the previously-released films. The post-apocalyptic series centers around the zombie apocalypse, with the original movie of the same name focusing on a group of survivors pulling off a heist in a Los Angeles casino. This initial film was released in May 2021, while a prequel,Army of Thieves, came out in October that same year. WhileArmy of the Dead 2hadn’t been confirmed, Snyder had many plans to expand the franchise.
Now,TheWraphas reported thatNetflix quietly cancelled any future projects within theArmy of the Deadfranchise, effectively shelving the series as a whole. This includes an animated spinoffArmy of the Dead: Lost Vegas, as well as a planned movie spinoff titledPlanet of the Dead. Despite how many large-scale plans were in place for the franchise’s further expansion, it appears the streaming service will no longer be producing more for the horror universe.

Snyder’s zombie franchisehad many plans in place for an expansive franchise, including an additional sequel afterPlanet of the Deadand a further prequel forArmy of Thieves. This included further exploration ofArmy of the Dead’s time loopand the larger exploration of the history of its many characters. However, all of this appears to have been dashed, with the only upcoming product from the franchise being a Halloween experience at Six Flags. The overarching narrative elements seem like they won’t be getting any resolution, at least not through another streaming release.
This potentially doesn’t bode well for Snyder’s newest project,Rebel Moon, whose R-rated director’s cuts were unable to break Netflix’s Top 10 films for the week they were released - something the initial cuts managed to achieve.Snyder’s plans include the ongoing prequel podcastThe Seneschaland up to four direct sequels to the initial movies, alongside an animated series and a four-player video game. While the multimedia aspects give his new project more potential beyond theseemingly confirmedRebel Moon 3,Army of the Dead’s cancellation shows anything could happen in the future.

However, whileArmy of the Dead’s fate could spell trouble for Snyder’s newest shared universe, standalone projects he makes for the streaming service could still have strong futures ahead of them. This includes theupcomingTwilight of the Gods, a standalone animated series based around Norse mythology. While it’s unfortunate the creator’s zombie franchise was cancelled, his extensive plans forRebel Moonand interest in standalone projects means there’s still a future for him at Netflix. However, it’s also a reminder that anything could disrupt his extensive plans for his newest sci-fi creation.
Army of the DeadandRebel Moonwere originally going to take place in the same universe, with a Xanadite girl in the sci-fi film being the connective tissue.
