The iconic catchphrase that has been uttered byWolverinefor decades is well-known by Marvel Comics fans, though oneX-Menissue changes the history of that saying forever… confirming it actually belongs to another mutant entirely.

Before joining the X-Men, Wolverine was the perfect killer who murdered targets as bothan unwilling tool of Weapon Xand as a contract killer for shadow organizations within the Canadian government (with some overlap, and a clear correlation between the two). Because of this dark history that consumed most of Wolverine’s adult life, he came up with the iconic saying:

wolverine quote best there is at what I do

However, X-Men reveals a character who is much better fit to have Wolverine’s catchphrase, despite Logan’s murderous track record.

Is Wolverine Really ‘The Best’ At His Particular Skills?

InX-Man#2 by Jeph Loeb and Steve Skroce, Nate Grey aka X-Man is being trained by Forge and Essex (aka Mr. Sinister in disguise) to use his incredibly strong mutant abilities against Apocalypse. This comic takes place withintheAge of Apocalypsetimeline, and Nate is a member of a mutant-rebellion team who regularly freed imprisoned humans and mutants from Apocalypse’s pens.

While Forge has made an effort to keep Nate’s existence off Apocalypse’s radar–since it is believed that Nate has the power to kill Apocalypse–En Sabah Nur discovered him anyway, and he sent a small team of his own mutant followers to kill X-Man and his entire team. One of those killers was a mutant who is normally a hero in the main universe of Earth-616: Domino.

Domino is The Best There Is at What She Does, Not Wolverine

Domino is a mutant with the power to subconsciously manipulate probability, meaning she is always able to create the best outcome for herself in any given situation. In essence, her superpower is luck. While that is great when Domino (who is also a trained killer) uses her powers and skills for good–more often than not as amember of the X-Force–it is an absolutely terrifying concept when considering that she is one of Apocalypse’s top enforcers.

Wolverine Finally Conquers X-Men’s Unbeatable Superpower, With Help From Magneto

In a world on the brink of collapse, Wolverine sets out to get revenge for those who couldn’t be saved - and he’s using a familiar approach.

This series basically establishes that when Apocalypse needs someone dead, he calls in Domino to do it. In fact, Domino basically says that herself in this issue. While tracking X-Man, Domino comes across another villain on Apocalypse’s hit list, Omega Red. After she defeats him,Domino says, “I’m the best at what I do. Ever was. Ever will be.”

Not only does Domino’s power prove that she is a more effective killer than Wolverine, Domino outwardly says Wolverine’s catchphrase while exhibiting exactly why that is true. Domino is trusted by Apocalypse (who didn’t even want to recruit Wolverine), and is shown defeating Omega Red, who is a villain Wolverine has had notable trouble fighting against in the past. From this epic show of her power to the fact that she actually said the words herself, Domino effectivelytookWolverine’s iconic catchphraseas her own, thereby confirming that she is theX-Menhero it truly always belonged to.
