TheRhuideanchapters are some of the most fascinating in all fifteen books, exploring the distant past, all the way back to the Age of Legends, where technology and magic joined forces to accomplish wonders.

Why Lanfear Decided To Set The Dark One Free In The Wheel Of Time
Lanfear Wanted To Wield The True Power
As shown in season 3, episode 4, which is now the highest-rated episode in the entire series,Lanfear partook in research that resulted in the discovery of a metaphysical energy source that existed outside of the Pattern. As she explains to Charn, this source of power would be infinite, stretching beyond the bounds and limitations of the One Power. This energy source was the True Power, the essence of the Dark One, the entity that looms overThe Wheel of Time’sworldas its primary antagonist.
So, it’s important to note that Lanfear didn’t intentionally release the Dark One, buther efforts to obtain more power and unleash deeper levels of magic drilled open the Bore. The Bore was eventually sealed byLews Therin, the Dragon, at the end of the War of Power, leading to the events we’re witnessing in the show, which take place during the Third Age.
