Dwarves are one of the fantasy races in J.R.R. Tolkien’sThe Lord of the Rings, and they hadmagical Rings of Powerforged by Sauron and Celebrimbor, just like the Ringwraiths and the Elves. The Nine famously controlled the Ringwraiths. In reality, they were dispersed across Middle-earth over the ages, and no Dwarf had managed to keep one by the end ofThe Lord of the Rings.
The Dwarves' Rings of Powerwere meant to enslave the Dwarves to Sauron, who made each ring subservient to the One Ring that he forged in Mordor. While the nine rings that Sauron gifted to Men successfully enslaved their recipients, the three Elvish rings were made behind Sauron’s back, without his touch. As such, Sauron couldn’t control them enough to make their wearers submit to him. Likewise, theDwarves were too hardy to be broken by their rings, although they were corrupted. This didn’t stop doom from befalling the Dwarves that held the rings, nor did it stop the rings from being scattered.

Tolkien’s son completed and published Tolkien’sThe Silmarillionin 1977, describing how “the foundation of each of the Seven Hoards of the Dwarf-kings of old was a golden ring; but all those hoards long ago were plundered and the Dragons devoured them.“Most of these rings were obliterated by fire, but Sauron managed to recover some. This was discussed by Gandalf inThe Lord of the Rings,who verified that “three he has recovered.”

Sauron Recovered Some Of The Dwarf-Rings
Sauron had recovered three of the Dwarves' Rings of Power by the time ofThe Lord of the Rings, so it can only be assumed that Sauron kept them in his dark tower of Barad-dûr for safekeeping. Sauron lived in Barad-dûr, in Mordor, southeast of the Shire, and likely held all Rings of Power in his possession either close by him or secured in the tower. The mysterious whereabouts of the Dwarves' Rings of Power was tackled byThe Hobbitmovies, in part.Sauron was revealed to have taken a ring from ThráinII, the father of Thorin II Oakenshield, who played a big role in the movies.
The Rings of Power were discussed at the Council of Elrond inThe Lord of the Ringsand Gandalf clarified thata Ring of Power “was taken with torment from Thráinin… Dol Guldur.” Peter Jackson riffed off this note to devise the scene inThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaugwhereby Gandalf found Thráin in the dungeon. It was too late for Gandalf to recover Thráin or his ring, shattering the last hope of a Dwarf-ring being found by the Fellowship. It was unknown how Sauron found the other two rings before the events ofThe Lord of the Rings.All three of Sauron’s Dwarf-rings were likely buried under Barad-dûr.
