Severanceseason 2, episode 9 saw Irving leaving his town seemingly for good, aided by Burt, causing many questions in the process.Severance’s regular cast of charactersreturned in season 2, episode 9 after the mostly self-contained episode 8 that focused on Harmony Cobel. Despite that, many of the regular MDR crew spent their time outside of Lumon’s office, withIrving further exploring his relationship with Burt. Meanwhile, Mark and Devon met up with Ms. Cobel in a bid to talk to Innie Mark about Gemma.

Where Irving is concerned, though, the episode was fairly cryptic. AfterSeveranceseason 2, episode 6’s endingin which Mr. Drummond was shown searching through Irving’s home, the character was said to be being dealt with by Helena Eagan. This led to Irving encountering Burt in his own home, with the latter asking the former to go for a ride with him. A small twist involving Burt’s character led to Irving leaving the town in which the show is set inSeveranceseason 2, episode 9’s ending, begging the question of where he is going and what Burt truly had to do with it.
Irving Is Leaving “As Far As You Can Go” Away From Kier In Severance Season 2
Where He Is Going Is The Main Question
InSeveranceseason 2, episode 9, Burt revealed himself as a driver for Lumon. He insists to Irving that he has never hurt anyone, but that he simply picks up people that Lumon tells him to, drops them off, and then leaves. For a while,Severanceseason 2, episode 9 makes it seem as though Irving is one such person that Burt has been ordered to deliver to the Eagans, especially after Helena’s earlier comments. That said, Burt takes Irving to the train station and tells him to board a train.
Irving does so alongside his dog Radar, leaving the town of Kier seemingly for good.Irving is told to go as far away as he can from the town inSeveranceseason 2, likely due to Lumon’s search for him. Irving clearly knows more than Lumon is comfortable with, explaining Mr. Drummond’s involvement and Burt being ordered to pick him up. However, Burt puts Irving on the train, begging the question of where exactly Irving is going.Severancehas not made it clear where Kier is supposed to be, meaning Irving’s destination is anyone’s guess.

Will Irving Actually Leave Kier Forever In Severance?
Is Irving’s Role In Severance’s Story Concluded?
Beyond where Irving will end up, a pressing question is whether he will ever return to Kier inSeveranceseason 2. If he does not, this could mean that Irving’s entire role inSeverance’s story is over. After all, Innie Irving is essentially dead, and Outie Irving’s investigations have been uncovered by Lumon. With these developments in mind, it would somewhat make sense for Irving’s entire role in the show to be over with, thus placing the focus on Helly, Mark, Dylan, and the other characters going forward.
Who Is Following Irving & Who Was He Talking To On The Phone In Severance Season 2 Episode 2?
Irving’s Outie has a cryptic conversation about his Innie on a payphone and is being followed, making his story in Severance season 2 more mysterious.
However,Severancehas made it clear that Irving has unfinished business with Lumon. Not only does he know about Lumon’s Testing Floor somehow, but he has been researching Lumon associates for what seems to be years before the show began. Moreover, Irving has a contact whom he was shown talking on the phone with inSeveranceseason 2, episode 2. If Irving is involved in a more organized resistance against Lumon, it is hard to imagine him leaving Kier for good without taking the company down.

The last major mystery to answer afterSeveranceseason 2, episode 9 is why Burt helps Irving escape Kier. Burt has made it clear that he has long turned people over to Lumon, with the implication being that he was supposed to do the same with Irving. In a change of heart, it was Burt who told Irving to leave Kier, begging the question of why he did so.
Perhaps the most obvious reason is the relationship that Burt and Irving had as Innies. The two have been shown to have that unspoken chemistry and connection outside of Lumon too, with Burt also stating that he wanted his Innie to live a good life so that he can be judged accordingly upon dying. Burt likely helped Irving escape as a means of taking a page out of his Innie’s book by saving the man his Innie loved and making the right decision, as opposed to being an accomplice of Lumon inSeveranceseason 2.
