Star Wars: Skeleton Crewshowrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford already have plans for a potential season 2 of the brand-newStar Warsshow, and it evidently will differ from smash-hit sci-fi showStranger Thingsin one key way.Skeleton Crew’sfirst two episodes premiered on December 2nd, 2024, on Disney+, and this latest addition toStar Warsmovies and TV showshas already proven popular. BecauseSkeleton Crew’scast of charactersso prominently features children, though, there are questions about whether a second season would be feasible—and the showrunners have a surprising answer.

In an interview withCollider,Skeleton Crew’sshowrunners, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford discussed the potential for season 2. The showrunners explained:

Wim looks hesitant in class, edited over KB and Fern in their speederbike in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

“We 100% have an idea for a second season and know what we would do. […] We have a built-in ticking clock of the kids and their age, and by the time we would get production going, we know what age they would be. So, we would be writing towards that. You’ll be growing up with the kids . […] It would be something like [a three to four-year time jump] to make sense. We haven’t seen the kids in a while, so it just depends on how tall the kids are. But we wouldn’t do like a Stranger Things thing where we’re like ‘It’s the next day,’ because it won’t be.”

This response from Watts and Ford is a promising one indeed, andit suggests they already have a blueprint to move forward ifSkeleton Crewis renewed for another season.

What This Means For Skeleton Crew Season 2

Season 2 Could Be Possible After All

Initially,it seemed unlikelySkeleton Crewwould be renewed for a second season based on the kids' ages. Filming forSkeleton Crewbegan in 2022, meaning that the kids have all aged two years already. Given it would take some time for production to begin ifSkeleton Crewwas renewed for season 2, this would no doubt mean the kids looking quite a bit older, which would need to be explained narratively. For that reason, many assumed this would be a single-season show.

These comments fromSkeleton Crew’sshowrunners reveal just the opposite, however, which is a surprising but wonderful update. Evidently, Watts and Ford have already accounted for this potential issue and are prepared to move the narrative forward in time as needed. This is excellent news, as it means thatseason 2 is far from being off the table.

Will Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 2 Happen?

Even as Star Wars' latest TV show, little is known about Skeleton Crew’s future. Here’s everything we know about season 2 of this Star Wars adventure.

Our Take On Skeleton Crew Season 2

This Show Already Has So Much Potential

With just two episodes released so far,Skeleton Crewhas already proven its ability to be innovative and take risks with new stories, concepts, and characters while respecting all that has come before. The number ofEaster eggs inSkeleton Crewalone reveals how connected it is to the rest of theStar Warsuniverse, yet the show also manages to feel brand-new. Because the show has already revealed it is capable of that difficult balance, I have every confidence that further seasons of this show would be brilliant.

The creative choicesSkeleton Crewhas made also mean there are nearly limitless opportunities for this story to be expanded. In just episodes 1 and 2 alone,Skeleton Crewintroducedthe pirate empire of Port Borgo, which could certainly lead to a number of unique stories, and the kids' own planet, At Attin, is clearly one of great mystery—not to mention how intriguing Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, is. Clearly, there is much more story to tell inStar Wars: Skeleton Crew, and while it may not followStranger Things’formula, a second season would be thrilling.
