Sid Meier’s Civilization 7has anew Emergent Narrative systemthat introduces thousands of Narrative Events to mix things up for players during each match. Emergent Narratives function based on players' choices, and making certain choices affects which Narrative Events will be available later on. These changes are designed to make the story of each leader’s civilization more immersive and reflective of the specific choices that the player makes. On top of that, Narrative Events will also make each campaign more unique and add a ton of replay value to the game given the sheer number of narratives available.

WhenCivilization 7releases in February, players are going to experience these narratives firsthand, and developers are hopeful that this new Emergent Narrative system, as well as the otheroverhauled gameplay systems, will give players a diverse range of experiences during every campaign. Narrative Events will be triggered by a number of different conditions, dependent on leader and civilization choices, unique buildings or wonder choices, and overbuilding (another new city-building feature), but can also be completely random. Here’s a look at how Emergent Narratives and Narrative Events inCiv 7will add to replayability and make each campaign more unique.

Narrative Events Are Random Or Have Unique Requirements

Emergent Narrative Events Are Triggered By Various Conditions

With literally thousands of Narrative Events spreading acrossCivilization 7’sthree new Ages, there are many different possible ways for triggering such events. For starters, a subset of these will be completely randomized, such as forDiscoveries in the Antiquity Age, which act asCivilization 7’s version of Goody Huts. These randomized Discoveries will trigger future narratives in the next Agebased on the decisions made for the initial event. The random elements of these Discoveries will make each playthrough distinct and exciting, more so than the randomness of Tribal Villages inCiv 6.

Overbuilding inCivilization 7allows players to essentially upgrade developed tiles from previous Ages that are no longer producing the same outputs in a new Age, such as upgrading an Altar to a Temple from the Antiquity to the Exploration Age.

Then there are conditional Narrative Events that are dependent on specific requirements. For example, in the Exploration Age Civ Stream (viaCivilization’s official website), an unexpected Religion-based Narrative Event was triggered because a Temple was overbuilt on top of an Altar. The Holy Relics Narrative Event is dependent on building a Temple on top of an Altar, but also requires Catholicism as a prerequisite Religion, adding further complexity to how players unlock these diverse narratives. Overbuilding is just one example, but the presence of Narrative Events will be ubiquitous inCiv 7,and each campaign will give players new opportunities.

Why Thousands Of Narrative Events Will Add To Replayability

Players Craft Their Own Narratives In Each Campaign

The massive number of Narrative Events inCiv 7is going to seriously increase replay value and add diversity to each campaign. Because there are dozens of leaders and civilizations, each with their own unique branches of Narrative Events with specific requirements,it isn’t likely players will see many of the same Narrative Events popping up from one match to the next. Based on how packed full of contentCiv 7appears to be, and assuming Narrative Events are contingent on hundreds of different possible decisions or conditions, there are bound to be surprises in store regardless of how many matches have been played.

Civ 7’s New Combat System Explained

Civ 7 will introduce new combat systems including Commanders and disciplines, siege warfare, and improved combat animations.

Overall, each campaign inCiv 7will be a unique experience in terms of the larger story that is told. Consideringhow each Legacy Path might add complexityto these Narrative Events is also interesting, andit will be exciting to see how Narrative Events culminate in the Modern Ageas various choices made across the Ages finally reach their climax. The new Emergent Narratives and Narrative Events inCivilization 7are bound to add layers upon layers of diversity, enhance replayability, and make each campaign more unique, and fans of the franchise will have no shortage of stories to uncover when it launches in February.
