Summary
Star Wars' darkest Sith temple really is the ultimate nightmare fuel. There are manyplanets rich in the Force, so-called vergences contested by the Jedi, the Sith, and - as seen inThe Acolyte- by other Force cults as well. Many specific vergences are the site of ancient Sith temples, carefully designed to channel their power so the Sith could accomplish horrific feats with them. Even Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar was created to use the power of a vergence, a desperate attempt to resurrect his beloved Padmé.
The Jedi Temple on Coruscant was built atop an ancient Sith shrine, an attempt to contain the dark side vergence found on the galactic capital. More dangerous, though, was the vergence found on Malachor, a Sith world that the Jedi feared so much they erased all record of the planet from their archives. But the most terrifying Sith temple of all, one that presumably tapped a powerful dark side vergence, is far less well known.

The Sith Temple In The Troithe System Is A Truly Terrifying One
Alexander Freed’s novelShadow Fallintroduces readers to the planet Troithe, a once-important world in the Mid Rim that had declined as Coruscant’s influence on theStar Warsgalaxygrew. This was an unusual world in that it orbited the Cerberon Singularity, a black hole that looked like a burning eye. Disturbingly, the book hints the Sith were once present in the Troithe system, and may well have played a part in the planet’s decline.
During the novel, former Imperial Yrica Quell - who switched sides due to the horrors ofOperation: Cinder- crash lands on an asteroid in a decaying orbit around the Cerberon Singularity. She and her medic droid IT-O, a reprogrammed Imperial torture droid, realize there’s only one possible way out; a mysterious dark tower build on the asteroid’s surface, one that sounds ominously like Darth Vader’s tower on Mustafar. Horrifically, it can only be accessed through suffering, and Yrica must subject herself to both physical and psychological torture just to gain entry.

This leads straight into one of the darkest twists in allStar Wars. Yrica Quell willingly subjects herself to agonizing torture at IT-O’s hands, trusting that she can get them both home. The process continues for days, and it’s only after a horrific amount of suffering that she realizes the droid is speaking oddly. Little by little she comes to realize the truth; her friend and confidant is gone, its old programming resurfacing. It is a torture droid once again, and it’s been drawing this out on purpose.
Quell is forced to kill her closest friend. In one final twist, the anguish doing so causes her is enough to open the door and give her access to the Sith fortress - and a ship within. Shortly after, the asteroid is consumed by the Cerberon singularity, its secrets and its evil erased forever from theStar Warsgalaxy.
