Why Did Steven Spielberg Visit The Thursday Murder Club Set?

The Filmmaker Is Not Involved In The Netflix Movie

Spielberg has long been known as a producer in addition to directing, but he has no credit whatsoever onThe Thursday Murder Club, so his appearance on the set of the movie may seem surprising. However,he has many longstanding connections with various members of the cast and crew, including the murder mystery’s director. Spielberg was involved in two majorChris Columbus moviesfrom the very beginning of the filmmaker’s career, producing 1984’sGremlinsandThe Goonies, for which the writer-director penned the screenplays (the latter of which was based on a story by Spielberg).

Columbus wouldn’t make his directorial debut until 1987’sAdventures in Babysitting, soGremlinswas helmed by Joe Dante andThe Goonieswas directed by Richard Donner.

There are also quite a few other cast and crew members fromThe Thursday Murder Clubwho have worked on previousSteven Spielberg movies. This includes Ben Kingsley, who played a major role in the director’s Best Picture-winning 1993 Holocaust dramaSchindler’s List. Spielberg was also a producer on 2014’sThe Hundred-Foot Journey, which starred Helen Mirren. Additionally,he has previously worked withThursday Murder Club’s producer Jennifer Todd, when he made a cameo in her 2002 movieAustin Powers in Goldmember.

Considering his deep connections to the cast and crew ofThe Thursday Murder Club, it makes sense that he may have been tempted to visit the set even though he is not directly involved in the project. Throughout his career, he has been known to be involved behind the scenes on unrelated sets, in ways both large and small, belying the general abiding love of filmmaking that he showcased in his recent semi-autobiographical effortThe Fabelmans.
