Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 5.Star Wars: Skeleton Crewjust gaveStar Warsaudiences the most realistic representation of what it would look like for a non-Jedi to use a lightsaber for the first time in all ofStar Wars’movies and TV shows. With only five of eight total episodes released so far,Skeleton Crewis already feeling like theStar Warsproject that comes the closest to ‘real life.’ This began withtheSkeleton Crewcharacters' homeworld of At Attin, one of severalplanets inSkeleton Crew, which had a remarkably similar appearance to Earth.
Skeleton Crew’sfour main kid characters—Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB—have also felt closer to the real world than mostStar Warscharacters tend to, Wim and Fern in particular. Charmingly, Wim was almost immediately shown to be obsessed with the Jedi, which also brought a pretend lightsaber battle between two children (Wim and Neel) to theStar Warsscreen for the first time. InSkeleton Crewepisode 5, however,Wim got a taste of the real thing, and it didn’t exactly go the way he thought it would.

Wim Has Absolutely No Idea What He’s Doing With A Lightsaber
Despite Being Obsessed With The Jedi, Wim Wasn’t Ready For The Real Thing
Toward the very end ofSkeleton Crewepisode 5, Jod Na Nawood shockingly took a knife to Fern’s throat, insisting that she yield and allow him to become the captain. In a stunning moment of bravery, Wim tried to defend her, wielding the hilt of a lightsaber he had found among Captain Tak Rennod’s treasures. When Wim ignited it, though, he didn’t take the stance of a valiant Jedi.

Instead, the lightsaber was facing the wrong direction, pointing toward the ground. Terrified, Wim de-activated it and tossed it aside. In spite of his clear fascination and even obsession with the Jedi, the reality of a lightsaber clearly wasn’t what Wim had in mind. While this could be brushed off as the actions of a scared kid, this moment was really so much more—it’s a much more realistic depiction of someone’s first experience with a lightsaber.
The Star Wars Galaxy’s Ancient History Is Revealed In These 14 Skeleton Crew Episode 5 Easter Eggs & References
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 5 features some pretty exciting Easter eggs and reveals to the galaxy’s ancient pirate history (and more!).
We All Imagine We’re The Jedi Hero… But We’re Not
Everyone Wants To Be A Luke, But Most Of Us Are Probably A Wim
What makes this moment so profound inStar Warsis the fact that it’s quite often the opposite. Even in theStar Warssequel trilogy, both Rey and Finn, two people who had never touched a lightsaber before, were able to quickly wield and even fight with it. Yet,Wim’s first use of a lightsaber is no doubt much more accurate, especially when it comes to the average non-Jedi.
Most viewers ofStar Warsof course want to see themselves in the franchise’s major heroes, like Luke Skywalker, and there are certainly a number of traits that heroes like Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other iconicStar Warscharacters have that are relatable. When it comes to skills with a lightsaber, however, it’s certainly not as easy as it looks. After all, behind-the-scenes clips from variousStar Warsshows and movies have shown how much intense training goes into lightsaber sequences.

This moment is also highly reminiscent of the image of Mark Hamill on the set ofA New Hope, looking directly into the hilt of a lightsaber. Realistically, were the average person to pick up a lightsaber, it’s easy to imagine that they either wouldn’t know what to do with it or would be completely startled when it was ignited. In that sense, this moment with Wim is yet another real-life connection inSkeleton Crew, even if that is a bit humbling for Wim and viewers alike.
Wim Was Still Brave Enough To Stand Up To Jod
The Skeleton Crew Kids Have Proven To Be Incredibly Brave
Even with this mishap with the lightsaber,Wim nevertheless was impressively brave enough to stand up to Jod, even knowing he (seemingly) has the Force and had a knife to his friend’s throat. As Fern herself voiced, Jod is also a ‘grown-up,’ creating an immediate power imbalance as well. This was a great moment for Wim, but it is also indicative of the personalities of all four kids inSkeleton Crew.

InSkeleton Crewepisode 4, it was Neel who most showed this bravery. When SM-33 had turned on the kids, Neel drew the droid’s attention toward himself instead, saving his friends but putting himself in harm’s way to do it. KB and Fern have also exhibited their own brave moments. After all, Wim only needed to defend Fern because she was refusing to yield to Jod, even as he was threatening to harm her.
There are only three episodes left ofSkeleton Crew, and it will be interesting to see how these characters, especially the kids, are further developed as this show comes to a close. In the meantime, it’s clear that this story will continue to blend the galaxy far, far away with elements of the real world.Star Wars: Skeleton Crewis truly unique amongStar Warsshows, and this brilliant moment with Wim is the perfect proof of that.
