There are many differentlightsaber typesin theStar Warscanon and Legends continuities, and the lightsaber pike is one of the most unique weapons in both timelines. While the standard single-bladed lightsaber – the most common iteration of the weapon – is rarely seen throughout the galaxy due to its nearly exclusive use by the Jedi Knights andSith Lords, both organizations have created numerous specialized variants of the powerful, Force-imbued, weapons. The lightsaber pike is one such variation, with the originalLegends continuity andStar Warscanoneach providing their own takes on the weapon.
BothStar Warstimelines have established that there are numerous lightsaber variants used by the Jedi and Sith. Some are slightly altered standard lightsabers, such as the curved-hilt lightsabers favored by master duelists or the short-bladed lightsaber shoto. Others are more extensive alterations of the standard weapons, like the long-hilted double-bladed lightsabers or thelightwhips, which project flexible blades. The lightsaber pike has different forms in the canon and Legends timeline, with both iterations being significant departures from the typical sing-bladed lightsaber.

The Star Wars Legends Origins Of Lightsaber Pikes
In their original Legends-era incarnation, lightsaber pikes were introduced to theStar Warsfranchise in theStar Wars: The Force Unleashedmultimedia project.Lightsaber pikes are long-bladed lightsabers whose hilts function as polearms, with the handles being long and sharp like spears and typically made of a lightsaber-resistant material, such as phrik metal. Lightsaber pikes are first shown being used by the Jedi Purge survivor Kazdan Paratus and members of the Emperor’s Royal Guard – including Imperial Senate Guards and the Emperor’s Shadow Guards. The Force-sensitive Knights of Zakuul fromStar Wars: The Old Republicalso favored lightsaber pikes.
The Emperor’s Royal Guards typically use weapons called force pikes which, despite their name, are simply powerful polearms with no Force enhancements.

How Are Lightsaber Pikes Used In The Modern Star Wars Canon?
Lightsaber pikes made their modernStar Warscanon debut in theStar Wars: The Clone Warsanimated series, which reimagined the weapons from their original Legends iterations.TheJedi Temple Guardexclusively used the new version of lightsaber pikes, which are depicted as double-bladed lightsabers with short yellow blades and hinged hilts, allowing the weapons to be folded. Notably, between the events ofThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker acquired a damaged lightsaber pike and modified it, giving it a smaller hilt and a single (and longer) yellow blade.
Every Canon Lightsaber Color In Star Wars (And Their Meaning)
Lightsabers in the Star Wars galaxy aren’t only blue and red – there are 8 canon lightsaber colors in Star Wars (so far). Here’s what they all mean.
Fascinatingly, the original Legends incarnation of the lightsaber pike is, in a way, part of the modernStar Warscanon as well. Darth Bane was known to use two weapons in the modern canon: a standard red-bladed Sith lightsaber and a “Sith Lightsaber Pike,” which has a long, polearm-like hilt and a short orange blade. It seems that in the modernStar Warscanon, the original version of lightsaber pikes are Sith weapons while the double-bladed lightsaber variant is the Jedi version.
