Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: A New Legacy #1

Star Warshas just reversed one of its funniest rules about Wookiees. In 1977’sA New Hope, Han Solo advises C-3PO and R2-D2 not to upset Chewbacca while playing a game of holochess, also known as dejarik, given the fact that Wookiees are capable of pulling the arms out of someone’s sockets. However, a new and canonicalStar Warscomic just proved it can be just as unwise to upset droids as well.

Black Krrsantan Threatens Beetee Whie Playing Dejarik

Celebrating the last 10 years of Marvel’sStar Warscomics, the newStar Wars: A New Legacy #1features a short story written by Kieron Gillen and Salva Espín entitled “Rogue’s Gambit”. The story stars key characters Gillen created for hisDarth Vaderseries published in 2015 including Doctor Aphra, the Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan, and the droid duo 000 and BT-1.Set before the events of the epicVader Downcrossover,Vader’s agents are killing time waiting to see if the Dark Lord needs their assistance, leading to Black Krrsantan and BT-1 playing a game of dejarik:

While naturally being a clear homage to Chewie and Artoo’s game inA New Hope, things play out much differently for their darker counterparts in theStar Warscanon.

Flipping the ClassicNew HopeScene

Despite being angered by BT-1’s legal move and threatening to pull off the blastomech’s limbs, 000 comes to his companion’s defense by pointing out that he doesn’t even have limbs. He also points out that neither he nor Bee Tee require oxygen like Krrsantan does, and that the Wookiee won’t blow a hole in the side of the ship like Bee Tee will. As such,000 tells the Wookiee bounty hunter to “let the droid win”, reversing Threepio’s classic quote inA New Hope(for good reason).

Star Wars Brings Back Its Most Badass Stormtroopers: “We Are the True Heroes of This War”

Celebrating 10 years of Star Wars comics, Marvel brings back Scar Squadron, the most epic team of stormtroopers who answered to Darth Vader himself.

Despite the golden protocol droid’s complaint in the original film that “nobody worries about upsetting a droid”, this new issue proves that it’s really just subjective and dependent on the particular droid in question. In Bee Tee’s case, it’s very much a bad idea to get on his bad side considering his full arsenal of weapons and explosives at his disposal combined with his unhinged and murderous programming. That said,Black Krrsantan’s never been a Wookiee to back down from a fight, hence the absolute brawl that ensues (which Aphra is unable to stop).

Darth Vader Put A Stop To The “Fun” And Games

No More Dejarik For The Dark Lord’s Agents

Hilariously, Darth Vader himself arrives to speak with his agents, demanding to know the reason for all the chaos aboard Aphra’s ship. Reminding them that they are allhispawns in a much grander game, the Dark Lord gives them a single warning lest they all suffer his wrath. As such, the story ends with Black Krrsantan and the droids deciding not to have a rematch, determining that murdering and killing for Vader seems to be a much safer use of their time.

Overall, flipping the iconic Wookiee rule fromA New Hopewith some of Marvel’s best comics characters is a pretty fun story to celebrate the last 10 years of galactic storytelling. Gillen’s characters have become very popular mainstays on the page, and evenBlack Krrsantan made his live-action debut inThe Book of Boba Fett. With that in mind, one can only hope that Aphra and the murderous droid duo will one day make screen debuts as well.
