The new trailer forSquid Gameseason 2 proves that I was totally wrong about what I thought the next part of Netflix’s hit show would be.Squid Gameseason 2has been one of the most anticipated shows for years now, ever sinceSquid Gameseason 1 became one of thebest shows on Netflixin 2021. Fans of the Korean-language drama have been waiting for years to see how Seong Gi-hun’s story plays out, and how the sadistic games continue. WhileSquid Gameseason 2 will address those questions, the answers may not be what any of us thought they would be.

Though the story ofSquid Gameseason 2 remains a mystery, the ending ofSquid Gameseason 1 gave a pretty good idea of what was in store for Gi-hun. After winning and spending a year on the streets, Gi-hun turned his life around and was about to visit his daughter in Los Angeles. Then, just before he got on the plane, the Front Man told him to leave, and Gi-hun turned around. That seemed like a great setup forSquid Gameseason 2 to be a kind of revenge story, but a new trailer flipped the script.

All Squid Game Games In Order: Origins & Meaning Explained

Squid Game centers around a series of innocent childhood games turned dark. Here’s the origin of each game in order, and their deeper meanings.

Squid Game Season 2’s Trailer Is Totally Different Than I Expected

I was honestly really surprised by the most recent trailer forSquid Gameseason 2. Instead of being the revenge story theending ofSquid Gameseason 1set up, it looks like the coming season is going to be something else entirely.Seong Gi-hun doesn’t seem to be in control, and it looks like he’ll be an unwilling participant in a new iteration of the games, rather than an outsider trying to take them down. It’s a complete shift from what has been set up, and it took me completely by surprise.

Squid Game Is Turning The Story Set Up In Season 1 On Its Head

The new trailer makes me think the show has completely flipped the script on the ending ofSquid Gameseason 1. Instead of showing Gi-hun looking for and hunting down the people who run the games, the Front Man clearly surprised him in his own apartment. The Front Man also seemed to be trying to dissuade Gi-hun from returning to the games inSquid Gameseason 1, but now it looks like he’s forced him back into them, and it looks like Gi-hun didn’t expect to be back in his green jumpsuit. To me, it seems likeSquid Gameseason 2 has completely disregarded its setup.

Squid Game: Why Gi-hun Dyes His Hair Red In The Finale

After a year of ruminating about his win, Seung Gi-hun alters his appearance and caps it off by dyeing his hair red in Squid Game — but why?

Probably the most notable - and symbolic - change is thatSquid Gameseason 2 reversed Gi-hun’s red hair. Gi-hun is back to his normal, albeit much shorter, dark hair, which seems to be a hint that he’s not as rebellious and enraged as he was in the year after winning the games.Squid Gameseason 1 put a lot of weight into Gi-hun’s hairstyle and the reasons he chose it, so I feel like it’s really significant that the show undid his decision. The change in Gi-hun’s hairstyle proves thatSquid Gameseason 2 can really take Gi-hun’s story in any unexpected direction now.

Squid Game Dyed Hair Red

I honestly don’t know what Squid Game season 2 is preparing, which is exactly the kind of mystery the show needs.

Squid Gameseason 2 could also be misleading viewers with its new trailer. There are only bits and pieces of Gi-hun’s story so far, and it could very well be that this is all part of his revenge plan.Gi-hun might have purposefully gotten captured by the Front Man, and his plan is to take the games down from the inside out. Alternatively, it might not actually be the Front Man in that mask, as it could easily be his police detective brother, Hwang Jun-ho. I honestly don’t know whatSquid Gameseason 2 is preparing, which is exactly the kind of mystery the show needs.

Season 2’s Surprises Could Help It Surpass The Netflix Show’s First Outing

IfSquid Gameseason 2 is already surprising me this much with just a teaser trailer, I’m cautiously optimistic that it could be just as good as - if not better than - the first season. A big reasonSquid Gameseason 1 became such an international hit was because it was so unpredictable.Everything about the show, from the games themselves - Red Light, Green Light and marbles - to Player 1’s true identity, was a surprise. All those unexpected turns worked perfectly together to makeSquid Gameseason 1 absolutely enthralling and deliciously suspenseful, and it already looks like the second season is taking the same approach.

The only waySquid Gameseason 2 could live up to its predecessor is by being just as surprising, and the trailer seems to show that it will do just that. If it’s not even following the setup fromSquid Gameseason 1’s ending, then there really is no telling what’s in store for Gi-hun. That might make the second season even more surprising and suspenseful, given most will go intoSquid Gameseason 2 with a preconceived notion of what’s going to happen. Even ifSquid Gameseason 2 can’t be more surprising than the first season, though, I still think it looks thrilling already.
