Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2, episode 4.
One of the main storylines inSiloseason 2’s episode 4 revolves around a harmonium, which is why the episode is aptly titled “The Harmonium.” As strange as the episode’s name may seem, it perfectly makes a narrative device out of its central harmonium, leaving many questions surrounding what it is and how Juliette uses it. While things get heated inside Silo 18 inSiloseason 2’s episode 4, Juliette races against time in Silo 17 to find a way to return home.

She realizes that if she does not get back to Silo 18 on time, many of her fellow rebellious citizens could rush out of the underground city without realizing the consequences of their actions. Therefore, with Solo’s help, she starts collecting random items that could help her build a makeshift suit. Surprisingly, one of these items turns out to be a Solo’s harmonium.
A Harmonium Is A Type Of Instrument Similar To An Organ
Solo Plays A Foot-Pumped Harmonium In Silo
As shown inSiloseason 2’s episode 4, a harmonium is an instrument that has a keyboard and a pump. Also known as the reed or pump organ, a harmonium can have two mechanisms. One mechanism involves a paddle, which can be pushed down with one’s feet to send air through its reed to produce sound. The other has a hand pump attached to the back of the keyboard. Solo seems to have the former version of the instrument, given how he uses his feet to push a paddle to pump the air out of the harmonium’s reeds.
Why The Tape Is So Important In Silo Season 2
After being a primary driver of Juliette’s narrative in Silo season 1’s ending, the heat tape continues to play a crucial role in season 2’s story.
Harmoniums are commonly used in South Asian nations, particularly for playing devotional or classical music. Owing to this, it is interesting that Solo, too, has a harmonium inSilo. However, since the show seems to merely adopt it as a narrative device, the harmonium’s presence in Silo 17 seems to be more of a plot contrivance rather than a reflection of the show’s setting or Solo’s background. TheApple TV+ sci-fi showeffectively uses it to establish how Juliette can use her engineering forte to repurpose everyday objects in the Silo to achieve her goals.

Why A Harmonium Becomes Important In Silo Episode 2
Juliette Uses It To Create A Makeshift Oxygen Pump
Solo points out to Juliette that the harmonium has a pump that can be used to push oxygen down a tube. Although Juliette initially ignores him, she realizes he is right. As a result, she creates an oxygen-pumping device that allows her to breathe underwater. She attaches a tube to the end of the pump that releases air and asks Solo to push air down by stomping on the paddle. Her invention works wonders, but her tube turns out to be a little shorter than expected.

Despite this, Juliette effectively uses the device to reach Silo 17’s supply closets. This is where she finds a fireman’s suit, which she intends to use to protect herself from the outside world’s harsh conditions when she steps out. While only time will tell whether the suit will help her inSiloseason 2’s future episodes, her ability to use the harmonium to make an oxygen pump proves that she will somehow find a way to return home.
