FBIseason 7, episode 4 introduces a potential new replacement for Tiffany Wallace when Syd Ortiz joins the team. Tiffany left theFBIseason 7 castafter the season premiere, explaining that she was moving to Georgia to work in her sister’s cafe and regain her peace of mind. Replacing her was not going to be easy, as she had been Scola’s partner since season 3, and he totally trusted her.
WhileFBIjustified writing Tiffany out, their explanations for why Scola’s new partners keep leaving aren’t nearly as clear. He has had two partners so far, and neither of them has lasted more than an episode. Sofia Ortega decided that the New York Field Office wasn’t for her, while neither Ulrich’s presence nor his absence was ever explained. When Syd arrives in “Doubted,” she’s not immediately introduced as Scola’s partner, but it’s clear that’s what her intended role is.

Ortiz’s introduction feels far more like a temporary character than a replacement for Tiffany Wallace. She approaches Isobel at the beginning of “Doubted” and begs her to take a rape case involving her sister, explaining that someone broke into her sister’s home and drugged her but ran away without completing the assault because her sister had an FBI badge in her nightstand drawer.Although this case does not appear to be in their jurisdiction,Isobel reluctantly agrees to take it as a favor to Ortiz’s late father, who was a well-respected FBI agent.

Throughout the episode, Ortiz demonstrates her ignorance about FBI procedures. She usually works with the Behavioral Analysis Unit, which creates psychological profiles of suspects to help determine the motive for their crimes and where they might strike next. Shecontinually disobeys Isobel’s orders and second-guesses her decisions, leading to a dangerous situation in which the rapist subdues her and ties her up while she is investigating him on her own. Despite this rocky start,Isobel welcomes Ortiz to the team at the end ofFBIseason 7, episode 4.

Ortiz was originally planned to be Tiffany’s replacement inFBIseason 7. Her BAU background was supposed to make working with her a new challenge for Scola, who never had a partner who didn’t know anything about how to think strategically while pursuing violent criminals. The seeds for this conflict were planted in “Doubted” whenOrtiz questioned Isobel’s decision to offer immunity to a suspect in exchange for information about the serial rapistthey were after, and later when she confronted a suspect by herself without communicating her plans to the team.
Ortiz leaving after a few episodes means that Scola will again be without a permanent partner within a few episodes, with no news about whether the series plans to change that now or when FBIseason 8 airs next year.
This plan will not go ahead, unfortunately. As reported byDeadline, Dick Wolf Entertainment decided to write Syd out before she debuted. The team responsible for this decision emphasized that it was not the actress' fault. They simply felt that the character was not the right fit forFBI’s New York Field Office after her stories went into production. Ortiz leaving after a few episodes means that Scola will again be without a permanent partner within a few episodes, with no news about whether the series plans to change that now or whenFBIseason 8airs next year.
