This is a major development for the third season and Jimmy’s relationship with his father has yet to be explored. Unlike other streaming exclusive shows which languish in limbo between seasons to get renewed,Shrinkingseason 3 was given a lightning-quick renewal order from Apple TV+. Just one day after the season 2 premiere, ther streamer picked the series up for more episodes. Though details are still scant because season 2 isn’t finished yet, there’s at least comfort in knowing that season 2 will not be the end of the story for now. Jason Segel made the announcement at 2024’s New York City Comic Con, confirming he’ll be back as Jimmy.

Continuing his hot streak as a dramatic actor with comedic flare,Jason Segel will return to play grieving therapist, Jimmy Laird, especially since he is so intricately tied to the creation of the show. Joining him will certainly beHarrison Ford’s gruff veteran shrink Dr. Paul Rhoades, who has his own Parkinson’s diagnosis to deal with.
The supporting cast ofShrinkingisn’t one to be ignored either, and Jessica Williams' Gaby should be on hand to continue her work with Jimmy and her clients. Meanwhile, Michael Urie will return as Jimmy’s best friend, Brian, while Lukita Maxwell will once again be on hand to play Jimmy’s daughter, Alice. Season 3 has expanded with the addition ofJeff Daniels (The Newsroom) as Jimmy’s father. Additionally, Sherry Cola (Nobody Wants This) and Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time) have also joined the cast in as-yet-unknown roles.
Creator Bill Lawrence has mentioned wanting to bring back Cobie Smulders as Sofi, but her return hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The ending ofShrinkingseason 2 almost resulted in disaster, but Jimmy’s “Jimmying” finally worked out, albeit at the last moment. Having forgiven Louis (and eventually saved his life),Jimmy is able to make amends for his grief that was manifested through Louis and his horrible mistake. This also allowed for healing in his relationship with Alice, who eventually forgave her father for his bad behavior since the death of Tia. Meanwhile, Paul finally admitted that he’ll need some assistance in the future with his worsening Parkinson’s disease, something that wasn’t easy for the lone wolf psychiatrist.
Elsewhere,Liz finally found a new purpose after her romantic issues throughout the first two seasons, and agreed to help Brian and Charlie raise their new baby. Showing herself to be a deft caretaker thus far, Liz might finally get to turn a corner by focusing on the needs of others. All this adds up to more compelling dramedy in season 3, and while an exact conflict isn’t apparent, Jimmy’s quest for closure, and his unorthodox methods, will certainly get him in trouble whenShrinkingreturns.
