Waving Farewell To What We Do In The Shadows After Season 6
Screen Rant: Paul, why was season 6 the right time to wind the series down?
Paul Simms: A little too soon and a little too late. We’ve all seen shows that tried to hang around a little too long. I don’t know, none of us when we started ever thought we were going to make six seasons. No one makes six seasons anymore.

It felt right, and also we just wanted to do a final season where we still had tons of funny stuff to do. If you’ve never seen it before, you could still tune in and understand everything that’s happening, but do something also for the hardcore fans who followed every twist and turn. We’re editing it right now, and it really is to me one of the funniest and most fun seasons we’ve done.
Kyle, speaking of the hardcore fans, what do you think is going to surprise them the most this season?
Kyle Newachek: I hate to say it, but it’s the final season. That’s a pretty big surprise now, isn’t it? That’s pretty big. I don’t know. I think that the biggest surprises come from the shadows. I’m not prepared; I just got here. Honestly, the biggest surprise for me is that I’m sitting right here right now. I was going to have a coffee!
What We Do In The Shadows Season 6 Will Be Full Of Fights, Funny Jokes & Friendship
Matt, you’ve played a lot of boisterous blowhards over the years, like Douglas inThe IT Crowdand Steven Toast inToast of London. After six years with the surprisingly sweet-hearted Laszlo, what separates him from those other characters?
Matt Berry: His humility and his love for another person. None of those other characters love anybody else apart from themselves, whereas he does. He loves his wife, which was refreshing for me.
Paul Simms: We always love the fact that Lazlo and Nadja were just absolutely, unquestionably in love, and I think the sixth season is the first time we ever see them have a real argument. But they make up very quickly.
Mark, we’ve seen Colin in so many different forms: confident, sleazy, boring, pitiful, empowered, child, teenager. When has Colin felt the most challenging for you?
Mark Proksch: It’s interesting because that character has to be all those things; he has to be annoying to survive. I think any time Colin had to be sentimental was a little hard to find. For that character, theoretically, that’s the opposite of what he needs to stay alive. Slipping into annoying was always easy and at home for that character, but sentimental was a bit tough.
Kristen, the Guide is such a cipher. What has been your favorite dynamic to play for that character?
Kristen Schaal: [I like] the fact that she just doesn’t learn. She’s just coming back to the same crew that doesn’t want her over and over. It’s such a clown thing to do; just totally missing the cues. I love that.
The Guide still never really found a best friend, but I’m sure she will. She’s okay, though. I mean, don’t worry about her! She’s not gonna be suicidal about it.
Paul Simms: At the beginning of this new season, she finds a new best friend and someone to follow and help.
Kristen Schaal: Yeah, she does. That’s right, thank you. Played by Mike O’Brien. It was fun.
What We Do in the Shadowsseason 6 premieres October 21 on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT with the first three episodes, which will be available to stream the next day on Hulu.
