Summary
Rick and Mortyis known for having one major sci-fi rule, but it was just broken bySolar Oppositestwo times in season 5. DespiteRick and MortyandSolar Oppositesbeing two entirely different shows set in different universes, both series are closely related, as many of the same creatives have worked on both series.Solar Oppositeshas featured severalRick and MortyEaster eggsthroughout its run, highlighting the connection that the two shows share. However, they clearly do not share the same writing rules, asSolar Oppositesseason 5 has proven.
Solar Oppositesseason 5 has finally been releasedon Hulu, with the titular band of aliens returning for another series of wacky sci-fi adventures. Solar Opposites Features 2 Time Travel Stories (Despite Them Being Forbidden In Rick & Morty)
In Episodes 3 & 6
Time travel is famously banned inRick and Morty, and while this fact is well-known,Solar Oppositesbroke this rule twice in season 5. AlthoughRick and Mortyis allowed to explore all kinds of wacky sci-fi concepts, both original and tired, it has been stated over and over again thatRick and Mortywill not do traditional time travel storylines. SinceRick and MortyandSolar Oppositesshare many of the same creatives, it was assumed that the Hulu series would have to follow this rule too. As it turns out, however, this isn’t the case.
Time travel first appears inSolar Oppositesseason 5, episode 3, in which the Opposites invent an item known as the “Edge of Tomorrow device.” This device allows the Opposites to live the same day over and over again, with them simply ending their own lives in order to travel back to the beginning of the day. Time travel is used again inSolar Oppositesseason 5, episode 6, after Korvo gets into a rivalry with another kid’s dad. After realizing that he can’t beat the dad, he travels back in time to kill him as a baby, although he fails at this too.

Why Time Travel Stories Aren’t Allowed In Rick & Morty
Harmon & Roiland Aren’t Fans
Rick and Mortyhas stayed away from time travel stories for a long time now, and this is why.Series creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are both admittedly not fans of using the concept, believing that it is overdone. Ahead of the release ofRick and Mortyseason 2, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon was interviewed byTHR, with Roiland briefly touching on his distaste for time travel. Here are his full comments:
[Rick and Morty’s season 2 premiere] still accomplishes something that I think is important that we set out to accomplish with the episode, which is, you should never f— with time. We wanted to tell a story of why we don’t do time-travel on the show and why time-travel is a f—ing nightmare and just a complete f—ing mess.

On top of time travel being a worn-out trope that has been done to death, the creators also believe thatRick and Mortycan’t create a time travel storythat hasn’t been done before. While the concept of time travel has been referenced several times throughoutRick and Morty, with the series even featuring an ever-present box of time travel items in Rick’s garage, it has never truly utilized the concept. This is why the use of time travel inSolar Oppositesseason 5 is so surprising, even if Justin Roiland isn’t involved with the series anymore.
You Will Never See Solar Opposites The Same After Season 5’s MCU Parody Twist
Solar Opposites season 5, episode 8 features a parody of a classic sci-fi trope seen in the MCU, but it acts as a huge twist that changes everything.
Solar Opposites Season 5’s Time Travel Stories May Mean That It Is An Exception To This Rule
It Leans Into The Repetitiveness
If the problem with time travel is that every story has been overdone,Solar Oppositesseason 5 may have avoided this problem in its time travel storyline. InSolar Oppositesseason 5, episode 3, the characters are constantly referencingEdge of Tomorrow, with the device even being named after it. Instead of the show pretending that it was able to come up with an original time travel story,Solar Oppositesleaned into the fact that it was using a repetitive concept, with this joke possibly being what sets it apart.
On top of that,Justin Roiland has leftSolar Opposites, and Dan Harmon was never involved with the show’s creation. Since Roiland and Harmon were the main two voices opposed to time travel inRick and Morty, it is possible that their absence fromSolar Oppositesseason 5 means that the show is able to use it.Solar Oppositesseason 5’s use of time travel is absolutely hilarious, so it is good that the two episodes weren’t beholden to the famousRick and Mortyrestriction.
