The Bennet sisters sitting together on a lawn in Pride and Prejudice

“Unlike her sisters, Mary isn’t your typical period drama heroine. She is awkward, anxious, preachy, full of facts, a terrible singer… overlooked by her mother and seemingly destined to an empty dance card for the rest of her life… until Mary takes matters into her own hands.

In “The Other Bennet Sister” Mary finally gets to experience an epic love story of her own, as she travels from the safety and claustrophobia of her family home in Meryton to the glitz of Regency London and the pastoral charm of the Lake District as she searches for independence, romance and acceptance."

Bad Wolf produces the 10-episode show, with Sarah Quintrell set to write all episodes. Kate Crowther, Becca Kinder and Jane Tranter serve as executive producers for Bad Wolf, while Rebecca Ferguson executive produces for the BBC. Quintrell also executive produces, along with Janice Hadlow. Dan McCulloch, Bad Wolf’s director of content, developed and will oversee the spinoff. No release date or casting information for the show has been announced just yet. Quintrell released the following statement regarding the spinoff’s announcement, expressing her joy at bringing this new tale to life:

“I’m thrilled to be telling the story of Mary – the other Bennet sister – exploring what it is to come of age when you’re the odd one out. It’s a joy to be adapting Janice Hadlow’s brilliant take on such a beloved classic with the team at Bad Wolf, and to have found our home at the BBC. I grew up (an awkward, anxious teen, getting everything wrong…) watching the BBC’s wonderful Austen adaptations. It’s the stuff every writer dreams of and I can’t wait to bring this beautiful story to screen – not least, for all the Marys out there.”

What The Other Bennet Sister Means For The Pride & Prejudice Franchise

Austen’s Work Has Inspired Numerous Adaptations

The Other Bennet Sisteris far from the first unique spin that’s been put on the franchise. Various novels and plays have expanded theworld ofPride and Prejudice, focusing on new characters in the same world or fleshing out existing characters. The story of Elizabeth and Darcy has been given various modern spins, including in movies likePride, Prejudice and Mistletoe(2018) andUnleashingMr. Darcy(2016).

Austenland(2013) also puts a unique spin on the story, and it stars Keri Russell as a woman who is obsessed with Austen and her works and who participates in some Austen character role-playing. Persuasion: Jane Austen Heroines, Ranked From Least to Most Inspiring

Austen wrote many formidable heroines. From imaginative Catherine Moreland to the clever Elizabeth Bennett, all have some trait to inspire others.

Thus far, however,no title in the franchise has honed in on Mary asThe Other Bennet Sisterbook has, and this means the upcoming show will be exploring some new territory on-screen. Considering the popularity ofDoctor Whoand Quintrell’s writing on shows likeThe PowerandHis Dark Materials, the show certainly looks to be in good hands. Those who have enjoyed the previous period adaptations ofPride and Prejudicecould end up enjoying this spinoff, as it could fill in some gaps in the original story.
