The protagonists of all fourDragon Agegames are incredibly well-loved and often lovingly and meticulously customized. Frequently, these custom characters will make appearances in subsequent games to aid and often “pass the torch” to the new protagonist facing the latest threat to Thedas. A customized Hawke makes a cameo inDragon Age: Inquisitionat the request of Varric to aid the Inquisitor against Corypheus. And, in BioWare’s latest release,Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a customized Inquisitor has a cameo to help Rook against Solas.
Dragon Age: The Veilguardintroduced a deep, sophisticated Character Creator menu that gave players near-total control of their Rook’s appearance in ways never before available in the franchise. Unfortunately, despite all the new features available in this menu, there’s no obvious functionality for players to begin a new playthrough ofDragon Age: The Veilguardand import Rook’s appearance from a previous save whencustomizing the Inquisitor. However, despite not having a straightforward button, it appearsthe import function for Rook can in fact work for the Inquisitor, if players are willing to use a small workaround.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Supports Importing Custom Inquisitors After All
There’s a Convoluted Solution to This Missing Feature
GivenDragon Age: Inquisitionreleased 10 years ago, players have had plenty of time to become attached to their custom Inquisitor, and the prospect of needing to recreate an older version of them over and over inDragon Age: The Veilguard’supgraded Character Creation tool can make starting a new playthrough seem especially daunting. Thankfully, as discovered byBluesky user @saewuvvand later reported byKotaku, importing an Inquisitor is as easy as importing Rook, as long as players do a bit of convoluted preparation first.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Cutting Out The Keep Was A Mistake That Made Returning Characters Weaker & Left Others Missing Entirely
Dragon Age: The Veilguard omits the Keep and suffers for it. This tool allowed custom worlds in Dragon Age Inquisition and made Thedas feel unique.
Only Rook’s appearance can be changed during gameplay, so players only have one chance to get their Inquisitor right before they are saddled with the locked-in appearance for the entire campaign. The ability to import a custom appearance for the Inquisitor allows players to not only get started on a new save faster but also allows them to make smaller-scale changes and refine the look of their hero withinDragon Age: The Veilguard’sart styleover multiple playthroughs.

How Importing An Inquisitor’s Appearance Works
Get Ready to Navigate Some Menus
To import a custom Inquisitor into a newDragon Age: The Veilguardsave file, players will need to start a New Game and resist the temptation to choose Import Character right away. Instead, immediately tab through the options to the Finalize menu and open the Past Adventures: The Inquisition menu. Select Make Changes, then Edit Inquisitor. Tab over to Appearance and choose Customize.
Next, make one small customization. It can be anything, from moving the head shape sliders to changing the hair color or style on the default preset. The goal is to make sure the game recognizes that a new, custom appearance exists for the Inquisitor that will now appear on the Appearances screen. Choose Accept Changes and note the new square on the screen beside the preset options containing a large scissor symbol.

Tab back over to Finalize, choose Accept, then Finalize, then Leave Customization. When prompted that the Inquisitor’s appearance cannot be changed later, choose Okay. Then, Close the Past Adventures menu and tab back to Lineage. Choose Import Character and select the save file containing the Inquisitor. Now, when opening the Edit Inquisitor menu again, select the square containing the scissors to import the Inquisitor’s appearance too. From here,it should be possible to make changes to both Rook and the Inquisitor, and all the choices made the first time to customize the World State will import alongside the Inquisitor’s appearance.
All Dragon Age: The Veilguard Cameos (So Far)
Players will be delighted to spot some familiar faces in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, bringing together characters from throughout the series.
It is also possible to start a fresh playthrough with a favorite Rook but import an Inquisitor appearance andInquisitionchoices from a separate saveby following the same steps before continuing through the Inquisitor menus to the Summary tab and choosing Finalize again. Then, return toThe Veilguard’sLineage taband choose the Import Character option again. This time, select the Rook to reuse and back over to the Finalize screen. The text on the right side of the screen should already read Past Adventures: The Inquisition: Custom. Do not open the Past Adventures menu again.

When attempting to import a Rook and an Inquisitor from separate save files, the desired Inquisitor must be imported before the desired Rook. After importing Rook’s appearance and making any changes to their look, faction, and the game’s difficulty settings,be sure not to open the Past Adventures menu again. Otherwise, the Inquisitor’s custom appearance will instantly revert to the one from the save file of the imported Rook.
After this, a player can make any further changes to Rook and start the game as normal. It’s a neat trick to cover a feature that initially seemed absent inDragon Age: The Veilguard, and it’s highly useful for veterans of the franchise. Given this is a workaround and not an official solution, it is possible that BioWare will release a patch at some point that makes this a permanent — and more straightforward — feature.
