Summary
Game of Thronesauthor George R. R. Martin has seemingly just revealed how many spinoff shows are still in development. Premiering on HBO in 2011,Game of Thronesconcluded with season 8in 2019, but the world of the series is set to live on in the form of various spinoff shows. House of the Dragon, released in 2022, was the first such spinoff, butA Knight of the Seven Kingdomsis now also on the way.
During a recent speaking event in Oxford, UK, Martin reportedly revealed, according to authorsElio & Lindaon X, how manyGame of Thronesspinoffs are currently in development.

According to the Elio & Linda post,Martin revealed that there are still seven spinoff shows “in various stages of development.“These seven include three live-action shows, two of which are theAegon the Conquerorshow andTen Thousand Ships, and four animated shows, includingThe Golden Empireand a Sea Snake show. There are three shows in the works, then, that haven’t been announced.
How Many Game Of Thrones Spinoffs Will Actually Happen?
It’s Unlikely All Of HBO’s Westeros Shows Will Move Forward
Game of Throneswas wildly successful during its time on HBO, and it’s no surprise that the company is looking to expand its Westerosi offerings for audiences. The decision to expand on Martin’s world has, so far, paid off, asHouse of the Dragon’s reviewsand viewership have both been strong. That spinoff recently concluded its sophomore outing, and it’s now been revealed that two more seasons are on the way.A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsisn’t due out until next summer, but that title is already hotly anticipated.
Game of Thronesactor Kit Harington revealed toScreen Rantearlier this year thatdevelopment has stopped on his Jon Snow spinoff.

IfA Knight of the Seven Kingdomsis met with a similar reception toHouse of the Dragon, then things are certainly looking promising for future spinoffs as well. It must be noted, however, that"in development” is different from a show being greenlit or in production. When a title is in development, this is usually more of an exploratory phase as creatives attempt to crack the story and build out their own vision for what the finished product might look like.
Every Upcoming Game Of Thrones Spinoff Explained
Game of Thrones ended, but audiences returned to Westeros for House of the Dragon - and HBO has even more Game of Thrones spinoffs in development.
It’s not unusual for projects that are in development to not ultimately move forward, andit seems unlikely that all seven of theseGame of Thronesspinoffs will actually pan out. Plus, HBO will probably be careful not to overload viewers with Westeros content. A third live-action spinoff, for example, probably won’t air beforeHouse of the Dragonhas concluded since that show will already be running concurrently withHBO’sA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Many questions remain about the largerGame of Thronesuniverse, but there are evidently a number of shows potentially on the horizon.
