Four stars from the cast ofNew Girlhave responded to a potential revival six years after the finale, explaining how the show could possibly continue. The sitcom follows the life of Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), who, after finding out her boyfriend cheated on her, moves into a loft with three men her age, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). The show focuses on thecharacters inNew Girlas their professional and personal lives evolve, including intersecting romantic relationships involving Jess and her frequently-visiting best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone).
Speaking withPeopleabout the show, Johnson, Greenfield, Morris, and Damon Wayans Jr., who plays guest character Coach, talked about the possibility ofNew Girlgetting a revival. While poking fun at Morris for his Emmy win and joking about how he’s the reason a revival hasn’t happened yet, they ultimately stated the show’s continuation would be up to series creator Elizabeth Meriweather. However, all four actors are open to the idea of coming back if given the opportunity. Check out what the four stars had to say below:

Johnson: You want the facts? Lamorne won’t do it after his Emmy. He’s got an Emmy clause. That’s real talk. He’s gonna spin it right now but that’s real.
Morris: I look at it like reparations, what I’m due, you know what I’m saying? Hard work. You know what I’m saying? Now, it’s time to pay the piper.

Johnson: So Fox was ready, we were ready. Damon was back and [Lamorne] did that speech.
Morris: A couple more commas, few more zeros. You know what I’m saying? Then, we in business. We’re back in business, baby. No, to be quite honest with you, from day one, I’ve been the one saying that I want it to happen. They don’t even respond in the text when I put it in there.

Johnson: Here’s the reality. This dude’s an idiot. He spent his entire Emmy campaign dragging me, and then we were laughing. None of us have any power about a reunion. But I think we all would if the right thing came, it’s really fun to be together.
Greenfield: We get asked so many questions about the show and ‘What about a reunion?’ And none of it is up to us. It’s so much about Liz Meriwether who created the show and what she would do differently and how she would direct the show and if she would want to do a reunion. So I think it’s her decision and how she would want to move forward.
Wayans: I think Liz is very funny and I think if she did bring it back, it would be great.
What The Cast’s Statement Says About A Possible New Girl Revival
It’s Not Outside The Realm Of Possibility
New Girlendedwith a rather perfect conclusion, as Jess and Nick wind up married and moving out of the loft, despite their assumed eviction notice being a prank pulled by Winston. The final scene of whole series reveals them playing their True American drinking game with their kids using soda, offering a happy and definitive ending for the series. However, the interest of a revival from the four stars indicates the show might not end on this positive note forever, potentially continuing with more comedic events into the future.
New Girl’s Best Love Story Is Not Between Jess & Nick
Cece and Schmidt have the best love story in New Girl because they push each other to grow as people, while staying true to themselves.
Meriweather’s involvement would be crucial for the sitcom to continue, as her vision of the series is what made it the perfect blend of comedy and drama for its characters. While aNew Girlrevivalcould happen in the future, her lack of response means there’s nothing definitive about whether the show will actually come back. For now, the series has stopped with the end of season 7, offering a positive outlook for the future of its characters and tying everything together by the end of the series.
Our Take On A Possible New Girl Revival
It Would Be Interesting, But Isn’t Necessary
Given the interest Johnson, Greenfield, Morris, and Wayans have in the prospect of revivingNew Girl, it would be interesting to see the characters years later, exploring how their lives have changed since living in the loft together. However, it’s also not necessary, given the series ended on a positive note, something that could be tainted if the show were to continue past its intended point. While that doesn’t rule out a continuation in the future, it’s not necessary for the series to come back.
Meriweather is currently developing the upcoming FX comedy dramaDying for Sexalongside co-creator Kim Rosenstock, based on a book of the same name by Nikki Boyer.
