While it may not be the most exciting aspect ofMonster Hunter Wilds, the great variety of endemic life is one of the many ways Capcom makes the game world come to life. If you pay close enough attention, plenty of smaller creatures are scattered about each area ofWilds'detailed locations, with some offering valuable rewards when caught. The Ghillie Mantle and Bug Net are equipped by the hunter at all times and don’t take up pouch space, so it’s a good habit to watch out for any rare creatures you may come across.

Unfortunately,Wildsdoesn’t have the same terrarium or room decoration mechanics as its predecessors. WithWilds' developers promising a permanent gathering hub to explore rather than the temporary basis camps, all the endemic life you’ve collected up until now will have a purpose once more. Regardless of how you feel about the endemic life inMonster Hunter Wilds, the Special Research Report quest lines are a great way to increase your Hunter Rank to progress further through the story.

Hunter catching a Gravid Bowfin in Monster Hunter Wilds

How To Catch A Dapperwing (Map Location)

The Colorful Friends Of The Scarlet Forest

After completing your first quest for Dareel to catch a Tracktail Lizard (easily found near the rocks in Area 11 of the Windward Plains), you’ll finally get to help out the energetic Samin’s Special Research Report, starting with the colorful Dapperwing. While the Dapperwing isn’t as consistently found as other endemic life, the bird’s overabundance means thatDapperwings can be found practically anywhere in the Scarlet Forest. The easiest way to find one by far is right outside the entrance of the Scarlet Forest base camp, with a couple usually perched atop some branches and vines hanging between two trees.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Gravid Bowfin Location (Where To Catch)

Being the first real fishing challenge in Monster Hunter Wilds, there isn’t much information about how or where to catch a Gravid Bowfin in-game.

If no Dapperwings spawn for you outside the base camp,Area Six has plenty of spots for them to spawnscattered throughout. Just be sure to keep an eye out for any large overturned logs or movement in the trees. I managed to find additional Dapperwings right across from the Antidote Herbs further north of Area Six, but they seem to spawn in random locations. Following the completion of Samin’s first quest, you’ll have to complete Dareel’s next research report before continuing.

How To Catch A Rime Beetle (Map Location)

A Simple Task For Experienced Bug Catchers

Thankfully, the Rime Beetle is one of the easiest endemic creatures to catch inMonster Hunter Wilds, being slow moving and even having its own icon on the map. Tocatch a Rime Beetle inMonster Hunter Wilds, the absolutebest location is outside the Oilwell Basin Base Camp in Area 7, found just down and to the left after exiting the camp. If you mess up or accidentally pick it up instead, you may simply use the filter function on the map to find another one.

Dareel’s previous Research Report requires an Ember Rufflizard from Area 9 of the Oilwell Basin.

Given that Dareel’s previous Research Report requires an Ember Rufflizard in Area 9 of the Oilwell Basin, you’ll likely be familiar with the area already and its deadly creatures. TheOilwell Basin also has plenty of high-value mining outcropsscattered aroundcertain areas as well. Plus, it’s agreat source of Dragonite Ore inMonster Hunter Wildswhen you’re already in the area searching for endemic life. Following the Rime Beetle quest, the second to last mission is Dareel’s request for a Gillopod, which I found crawling on the wall right across from the entrance to the Area 6 camp in the Ruins of Wyveria.

How To Catch A Sandstar (Map Location)

Pushing The Bug Net To Its Limits

The Sandstar is by far one of the most difficult endemic creatures to catch inMonster Hunter Wilds, and is only available under very specific conditions with an incredibly low spawn rate. To actually catch a Sandstar, you’ll need tosearch for it during the night with the Plenty weather condition activated.Thankfully, the pop-up camps inMonster Hunter WIldshave a rest function that lets you change the time of day and weather conditions simultaneously for 300 guild points, although it can’t be done during certain sections of the later story, making this quest better done sooner rather than later.

There have been reports that changing the weather to Inclemency and back to Plenty can reset the spawn chance if you’re having trouble finding it, although both times I’ve found the Sandstar have been using the location fast travel reset.

The Sandstar itself isfound on the southern side of the WindWard plains map in the desert— most commonly, around the rocks in Area 11. The best option is to start in Area 13’s West Campsite, making a loop around the top of the Area 11 desert, before ending at the path leading to Rey Dau’s nesting site. If the Sandstar doesn’t spawn for you during a loop, your best bet is to fast-travel to a separate location like the Scarlet Forest or Iceshard Cliffs, before traveling back to the camp once more.

Both times I’ve found the Sandstar it has spawned next to the lone Nitroshroom at the edge of the rocks in Area 11. It is the most reliable spot to find the Sandstar, by far.

While it may be tempting to shoot your bug net at the Sandstar the moment you see it, the Sandstar’s speed makes it nearly impossible to catch without aid, even with the use of the Ghillie Mantle. To net a speedy Sandstar, you have to first shoot a screamer pod at the creature while wearing the Ghillie Mantle, momentarily stunning it before catching it with your trusty Bug Net. The time it takes to catch a Sandstar can vary greatly, making completing Samin’s endemic life research quests inMonster Hunter Wildsa task of pure dedication.
