The reboot was announced in January 2023 before being given a full series order in May of that same year. That same month, the show’s first trailer came out. However, due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, theupcomingMatlockrebootwas delayed. CBS later revealed it would have a place on their 2024-25 primetime schedule.
Now,CBShas released a new trailer forMatlockstarring Kathy Bates, the first glimpse at the series in 16 months. The trailer reveals the originalMatlockto be a TV series within the reboot’s universe, withBates' Madeline “Matty” Matlock using her age to make herself seem less capable than she is.With both a past as a lawyer and needing to take care of a child, she gets a job at a law firm to help with their cases.

Bates' Matlock proves herself to be a quick-witted addition to the firm, even though she’s illustrated as having to acclimate to how the modern justice system works. It also seems she’s harboring a secret reason for being at the firm, seeking out an old case on her first day. What Matlock’s New Trailer Reveals About The Show
This Is A Very Different Series From The Original
The trailer establishes right away that, despite pulling inspiration from the classic ’80s legal drama, this new version of the show is going to be very different from the original. Sporting the tagline “She’s not the Matlock you’re expecting,” theseries appears to have its own vision separate from the Andy Griffith-led source, with a fish-out-of-water premise offering different angles to its stories. This is especially apparent with the underlying reason Bates' Matlock seems to have joined the firm, as one of their cases might be connected to her past.
In addition to Bates, the series stars Skye P. Marshall as senior attorney Olympia, Jason Ritter as Olympia’s ex-husband Julian, David Del Rio as associate Billy, and Leah Lewis as another associate, Sarah. Patricia Belcher is also seen in the trailer, the scene hinting at her character’s suspicions surrounding Matlock’s real goal for being at the firm. While it’s still unclear how the reboot will stack against the original, considered to be one of thegreatest legal dramas of all time, its differences could help it stand out among others in its genre.

What We Think Of Kathy Bates' Matlock Trailer
The Show Looks Like A Promising Reboot
With the trailer acknowledging the original series right near the beginning, it’s clear this rendition ofMatlockwill be going in its own direction contrasted with its inspiration. I believe the show is going to be like its source material in name alone, using it as a jumping-off point to create a different story with plenty of unique attributes that make it stand out. With the show premiering early, it seems like CBS might want to gauge initial public reactions, potentially hoping it will be a big hit for the network.
