The first trailer forThunderboltsshows a new team in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, and the team’s Black Widow appears to be even more dangerous than the original.Thunderboltsboasts an all-star castof heroes and villains from several years of the Marvel Universe, with somemore familiar faces like Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier being joined by what seemed to be one-off villains like Ghost. The team dynamics promise to be unusual for the franchise, and there appears to be a greater focus on darkness and violence than in the rest of the universe.
Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was perhaps the most undervalued part of the original Avengers team, andDisney made several mistakes with her character and her deal concerning the release ofBlack Widow. Fortunately,Scarlett Johansson has returned to the MCUas an executive producer onThunderbolts*. This suggests a possible repair of relationships, which is fortunate, as there is still hope that her Black Widow will appear in futureAvengerssequels despite herdeath inAvengers: Endgame. In the meanwhile, her replacement seems to be set to give a very different kind of performance.

Yelena Ends Her Hallway Scene In A Far More Brutal Way
The Thunderbolts* Scene Resembles A Black Widow Scene From Iron Man 2
Contrasting with the hallway fight scene Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow participates in duringIron Man 2, thenewThunderbolts*trailershows a different kind of fight scene with Yelena. The scene is intense and ends with several gunshots from Yelena, suggesting a number of fatalities. This kind of dark violence was generally avoided with Johansson’s Black Widow, but makes for a compelling contrast between the two characters. Yelena’s fighting is more frenetic and less restrained, thereby making it more frightening and dangerous.
All of this seems to contribute to an unusual film and anexcellent sequel to Marvel’s Phase 4.The tone of the newThunderboltstrailer feels darker and more violent, with the trappings of a DCEU film more akin toSuicide Squad. While there are still many of the MCU’s typical hallmarks, including jokes and quips, the feel ofThunderboltsis unusual for the universe. This is well exemplified by this dark examination of Yelena, who appears to be at the film’s heart.

The Thunderbolts' Black Widow Is So Much More Dangerous Than The Avengers'
The Thunderbolts Team Is Much More Dangerous Than The Avengers
Each of the Widows have had dark pasts, andYelena’s complex characterizationhas certainly left some scars on her.The character, who is often known in the comics as the White Widow, does not appear reluctant to use violence,as shown in the new trailer. She fights with earnestness while the rest of the team attempts to do the same beside her. This is largely what separatesthe Thunderbolts teamfrom the Avengers: They are dangerous and willing to do terrible things that heroes would not.
John Walker has killed with his shield, and Yelena has committed violent acts in the past as well. While there will surely be deep moments of characterization in the movie, and while that may lead to a more heroic path for each of the characters in the film,it is also important that the team’s darkness be highlighted.Yelena and Natasha are incredibly different characters despite their history together, and it makes sense thatThunderbolts*is leaning into that with its violent action.

Thunderbolts*: Everything We Learned From the First Trailer
Disney finally dropped the first trailer for Thunderbolts*, giving fans the best look yet at the upcoming film.
With a poster that features the new team holding weapons, and a sequence that sees them facing off against one another,it is clear thatThunderboltswill explore an unusual team dynamic within the MCU. This is an exciting way to keep the franchise fresh and appears to be quite promising. The film seems to be built around Yelena, which is compelling because of Florence Pugh’s excellent performance and her links to the MCU past.Thunderboltswill provide a new understanding of what a Black Widow can be when it is released next year.
