Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 3!
With the finale having killed off multiple characters, Michael Beach is now sharing his thoughts on Kareem’sMayor of Kingstownseason 3 death. Introduced as the leader of the prison guards, Beach’s character would rise to become Kingstown’s warden following the season 1 riot.Mayor of Kingstownseason 3saw Kareem still grappling with his PTSD over the riots, as well as trying to forge a better path for the prison away from Jeremy Renner’s Mike, though would be worn down by Mike and, on the verge of being fired, allow himself to be killed by AB inmates.
During a recent interview withScreen Rantfor the upcoming dramedyI’ll Be Right There, Beach opened up about Kareem’sMayor of Kingstownseason 3 death. The star found that the decision was a fitting sendoff for his character, particularly as he felt thatKareem would not ultimately allow himself to process the trauma of his pastand grow from it, putting him and his family on a self-destructive path that could have led to more than just his death. See what Beach explained below:

Michael Beach: Well, for me, he’s in jeopardy of losing all of the benefits that he’s had, that he’s developed all this time, so his family is in dire straits. And the scary part is that if he continues on, he may jeopardize that. And the other main thing, I think, is his family’s in dire straits because of him. Because he’s so proud and happy that his daughter is getting the therapy that she needs, but he never did, and I don’t think he ever will. And so the question is, “Can they get better if he’s not getting better?”
She’s being helped on one end, but being hindered on the other end by him. So if you take him out of the picture — and there’s arguments like, “Oh no, now they’re missing their father, and this and that and blah, blah, blah.” Of course, it’s all true, but I think that’s where, at least in my working, knowing that that’s where we were going — and because it’s not Kareem story, you don’t get a lot of opportunity to kind of flesh the that story out. So, I think I only have 2–4 scenes per episode to really work on this and that. So, I think the way we ended up doing it, to me, was pretty powerful.

What Kareem’s Death Means For Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4
The show hasn’t been renewed yet, but is well on its way.
Though he may have been on the verge of being fired from his job,Kareem was in the middle of manyofseason 3’s storylines, which is sure to bring some major consequences forMayor of Kingstownseason 4. Near the end of the season, Kareem had finally figured out Kevin was actually an inside man for Bunny in the prison, and had tried to sway him to move away from working with Bunny. While having delivered a final message to Kevin in the hopes of reaffirming his mission to make a better prison, his familial ties to Bunny without Kareem’s oversight could see more mayhem between the gangs inside.
Mike’s lack of having someone he can negotiate with may also raise further issues for Renner’s character heading intoMayor of Kingstownseason 4. Theby-the-book legal system has slowly begun to gain ground in the city, threatening Mike’s efforts to keep peace in Kingstown, even as tensions rise between the gangs and police. However, more importantly, Kyle’s arrest after his attempt to kill Robert intheMayor of Kingstownseason 3 finalemay also see him unprotected if Mike is unable to work with whoever becomes the new warden of the prison.
