AJim Carreyfranchise has received a surprising update a decade after the release of the latest sequel. The Emmy-nominated performer is best known for his roles in comedies, with his breakout roles coming in the mid-1990s in movies includingAce Ventura: Pet DetectiveandThe Mask. Over the years, he has appeared in a variety of well-known comedies, such asLiar LiarandBruce Almighty,in addition to dramas includingThe Truman ShowandEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Cumulatively, his movies have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide.
Although the star is now a part of theSonic the Hedgehogfranchise, where he has played the villain Dr. Robotnik in three consecutive installments, for quite some time, he rarely made sequels to his movies. The one major exception was 1995’sAce Ventura: When Nature Calls, though several follow-ups to his movies were made without his involvement, including 2007’sEvan Almightyand 2005’sSon of the Mask. Carrey did not break his sequel rule again until 2014, with a movie that is part of a franchise that may continue to expand.

Dumb And Dumber Could Get Another Sequel
Carrey Has Starred In Two Of The Three Movies
AlthoughJim Carrey moviesinfrequently get sequels, one that spawned its own franchise was 1994’sDumb and Dumber, which was directed by Peter Farrelly from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Bobby and their collaborator Bennett Yellin. The movie starred Carrey and Jeff Bridges as a pair of best friends with low IQs and spawned a television adaptation and a prequel, though neither star returned to reprise their roles until the 2014 legacy sequelDumb and Dumber To, which was co-directed by Peter and Bobby.
Dumb and Dumbergrossed $247.3 million against a $17 million budget, while its 2014 sequel earned $169.8 million against $50 million.

The Farrelly brothers recently sat down for an interview withColliderwhile promoting their new Jack Black holiday comedyDear Santa, which is their first collaboration in a decade. When discussing future projects, Bobby Farrelly saidthey would “never rule out” a new movie in theDumb and Dumberfranchise, potentially for the 40th anniversary in 2034, because “we have so much fun making those that we could revisit that.” Peter Farrelly added that the prospect had already been floated and that Carrey had suggested calling it “Gum and Gummier.” Read their full quotes below:
Bobby Farrelly:We could never rule out maybe doing another Dumb and Dumber, and this year’s the 30th anniversary. Maybe at the 40th anniversary, just because we love Jim [Carrey] and Jeff [Daniels] so much. We have so much fun making those that we could revisit that, for sure.
Peter Farrelly:And Jim wanted to call it Gum and Gummier.
What This Means For Dumb And Dumber
The Sequel Still May Not Happen
These comments do not necessarily mean that a newDumb and Dumbermoviewill ever come to fruition, particularly one featuring the participation of Jeff Daniels andJim Carrey. However,it is not entirely outside the realm of possibility given the increased clout the duo has gained in Hollywoodsince the release of the first installment. One of the key factors that could guarantee the movie gets financing is the fact that Peter Farrelly is now a two-time Oscar winner, having written and produced the 2018 Best Picture winnerGreen Book, which he also directed.
