The trailer for James Gunn’sSupermanmovie meetsSmallvillein an edit that I did not know I needed until now. Thetrailer forSupermanwas first released online in December 2024, marketing the massive DCU movie ahead of its July 2025 release date. As the true beginning of theDCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,Supermanfaces a lot of pressure, but the reactions to the teaser trailer were glowingly positive. As many hopeSupermanbecomes one of thebest-rankedSupermanmovies, fan edits and theories are becoming commonplace.

One of the best fan edits comes courtesy ofmighty_raviolion TikTok. The edit blends the trailer ofSupermanwith the iconic theme song fromSmallville’s intro, providing a mash-up of two eras of the Son of Krypton.

The section of the trailer used comes after David Corenswet’s Superman tells Krypto the Supergod to take him home. The ensuing epic shots of Superman in action, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor are then shown as “Save Me” by Remy Zero blasts out.

What The Superman Trailer Edit With Smallville’s Theme Song Means

Above all else, the meaning ofSupermanbeing edited withSmallville’s theme song is simply that there are many beloved eras of the iconic DC hero. WhileSupermanis not yet out, the trailer has proven how strongly James Gunn understands the character, leading many to already hold the iteration in high regard. When combining that withSmallville’s theme song, it becomes clear how blending this new era with an older one still works.

Smallvilleended in 2011, yet it perseveres as one of the most well-liked iterations of the character. Despite its smaller scale and TV trappings,Smallvillesolidified Tom Welling’s Superman as the definitive version of the character for an entire generation. This has been proven above all else by the editing of the show’s theme song with Gunn’sSupermantrailer, summing up the love that is out there for so many iterations of the Man of Steel.

Our Take On The Superman Trailer Edit With Smallville’s Theme Song

Gunn’s Inspirations Are Clear

Aside from what I pointed out earlier, theSupermantrailer being edited withSmallville’s theme song made me realize how much Gunn is letting the iterations of the past influence his version of Superman. Gunn has made it no secret that hisSupermanstory is going to honor what has come before while also marking a beginning for the DCU, which the TikTok edit above proves. The fact that theSmallvilletheme song does not feel out of place alongside Gunn’sSupermanis certainly a sign of this.

Smallvilleis a show that many consider a near-perfect depiction of the character. While it has its issues,Smallville’s characterization of Clark and Superman is beloved, which Gunn will undoubtedly be aware of. The elements showing Clark inSuperman’s trailer blend with the music so well, potentially hinting that the DCU’s version of the character will align with that ofSmallville, while also taking cues from the DCEU’s version, Brandon Routh’s Superman, and, of course, Christopher Reeve’s too.
