Thrawn’s Goals Differ From Other Star Wars Villains
Despite his allegiance to the Empire, Thrawn was never under the impression that the Empire was anything less than corrupt and oppressive.He attributes much of that corruption to its leadership under the tyrannical Palpatine, resting in the belief that Palpatine wouldn’t live forever. However, while Palpatine was in power, Thrawn believed in the harsh leadership of the Empire and its ability to protect the galaxy from unknown threats in the dark corners of space.
Though he tended to disagree with the Empire and was openly critical of its behavior,Thrawn never spent his time trying to change it or seek individual power of his own. Instead, Thrawn hoped to one day use his influence to impact the Empire’s next leader to retain the defensive might established by Palpatine without being as dictatorial. By the time Thrawn is found inAhsoka, Palpatine’s Empire is long gone. After all that time on Peridea, it will be interesting to see how Thrawn adjusts to the government of the New Republic, now that he has returned to the originalStar Warsgalaxy.
