Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 7!Since the very beginning of the show, the identity of “pit girl” has been one ofYellowjackets’ biggest mysteries, with a new character’s introduction hinting at a big twist to this story.Yellowjackets’ pilot episode kicks off with somewhat of a “flash-forward” in the past timeline, asthe masked teens are seen toward the end of their time in the wilderness hunting a girl who dies falling into a spiked pit. The dark-haired girl, wearing Jackie’s gold heart necklace, is later cannibalized by the others, with only Misty’s face eventually being shown to the camera.
With subtle clues being dropped over time as to what role the surviving characters play during the pilot’s cannibalism ritual, the debate overwhoYellowjackets’ pit girl ishas continued to grow with each season. Since the mystery character has long dark hair, the most likely candidate for pit girl’s identity has long been deemed to be Mari, as she’s also implied to have died while the teens were in the wilderness. However, the formal introduction of Hannah, Edwin, and Kodiak inYellowjacketsseason 3, episode 7 changes the established poolof potential pit girl characters.

I Think Hannah Is Pit Girl In Yellowjackets, Not Mari
Yellowjackets Drops Some Foreshadowing Hints About Hannah’s Death
Mari has been dethroned as the most likelyYellowjacketscharacterto become pit girl, as that title now goes to Ashley Sutton’s Hannah. Originally, it was thought that the only female characters in the wilderness would be the girls from the soccer team – until Hannah showed up. Although she’s probably about a decade or so older than the teens, theshort, dark-haired, fair-skinned Hannah has a similar physique and stature to the other girls who matched pit girl’s vague physical appearance.
Yellowjackets' Survivor Sacrifice & Cannibal Ritual Explained
The ritual behind the cannibalism seen in Yellowjackets' premiere episode was finally revealed in season 2. Here’s a full breakdown of the process.
Yellowjacketsseason 3, episode 7 also drops some other hints about Hannah potentially becoming the doomed pit girl. For one,Hannah’s experiences with the teens begin with being hunted by them through the woods, which would make for a dark bookend if her last experience with them is being fatally chased through the wilderness. Additionally, while Hannah is running, a chunk of her hair is pulled out when it gets stuck on a tree, which ties into the Antler Queen’s gown having several locks of hair during the pit girl’s cannibal ritual.

Hannah being pit girl is also made more likely by the established confirmation of her death in the wilderness, with Shauna andYellowjackets’ other present-day survivorshinting at its particularly gruesome nature. Tai notes that Gen and Melissa eventually become really close to Hannah out in the wilderness, which suggests that she lives with them for an extended period of time, becomes closely integrated into their “village,” andcould very well survive until next winter arrives – which is when pit girl dies. Mari could still eventually be killed during a sacrifice, but Hannah seems to be the mysterious pit girl.
Why Hannah Being Pit Girl Would Be More Disappointing Than One Of The Yellowjackets
Pit Girl Should Be An Original Character
Considering pit girl’s death is the viewers’ first introduction to the entire show andYellowjackets' teens in general,it would be more effective to learn that this victim is someone who we’ve been with since the pilot episode. With the stakes for the teens having been high since the moment their plane crashed, it would feel cheaper and less satisfying for the biggest mystery death to be a character who arrives later in the story and is relatively removed from the show’s emotional core.
That dramatic impact is undermined by the mystery victim being someone random who they already almost killed the moment they met her.

Part of the reason theYellowjacketspilot’s pit girl and Antler Queenscenes were so emotionally jarring and terrifying was thatwe were led to believe they get to such a desperate, corrupted point that they’re doing this to themselves. While that’s technically still true, pit girl was the epitome of this switch. Turning against one another so brutally and inhumanely was the scary part, and that dramatic impact is undermined by the mystery victim being someone random who they already almost killed the moment they met her.
The harsher devastation fromYellowjackets’ pit girl scenes was the notion that these girls go from best friends, romantic interests, petty rivals, and united teammates to simply predator and prey. Meanwhile, Hannah was arguably always prey. She was an outsider who they could never fully trust as one of their own, someone who they could never let return to society and potentially expose their secrets. As such, the emotional dilemma, moral decay, and loss of humanity that it took to get to the point of killing Hannah isn’t nearly as compelling as what it took to kill each other.
When Will Pit Girl’s Death Happen In Yellowjackets?
Pit Girl’s Death Likely Won’t Happen Until At Least Season 4
The Yellowjackets are now reaching the end of their time in the wilderness.Season 1 revealed that the teens were stranded for 19 months, initially crashing in 1996 before being rescued in 1998. Since Shauna is implied to have become pregnant right before their plane ride, the birth of her son establishes that about nine months pass beforeYellowjacketsseason 2’s ending. The season 3 premiere begins with another time jump to the Summer Solstice, suggesting they’ve been out there for a bit more than a year.
The exact month of the Yellowjackets' plane crash isn’t confirmed, but certain clues suggest it happened in May 1996.
If the teens are about 13 months into their time in the wilderness, then only about six months should still remain inYellowjackets’ past timeline. Since pit girl’s death happens during heavy snowfall, that moment could come anywhere between four and six months from now, if the estimated timeline is accurate. Unless there’s another time-jump inYellowjacketsseason 3’s past timeline, then pit girl’s death likely won’t happen until later in season 4 or even 5.
