Summary

Recasting Hugh Jackman asWolverinewould be quite hard, and I now believe that theMarvel Cinematic Universeis better off not doing it. Jackman is one of the most iconic actors when it comes to Marvel and superhero movies in general.Fox’s X-Men movieshelped usher in the era of superhero adaptations, with Jackman’s Wolverine emerging as the main character of the franchise. After the Wolverine trilogy,I was okay with Jackman retiring from the role in 2017’sLogan, as the movie was the perfect send-off for the hero. I even started to think of possible new Wolverine actors.

However,Deadpool & Wolverinehas made what would already be a difficult task even harder. Jackman’s return as Logan put him opposite Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, and the duo showed how much chemistry they have in those roles. It would be a shame to do away with that after only one movie, and even though I think Henry Cavill’s Wolverine, one ofDeadpool & Wolverine’s many cameos, would be a cool choice for the MCU’s X-Men reboot, I’m now convinced thatJackman could continue in the role, with no recasting neededfor the foreseeable future.

It is unlikely that Hugh Jackman will play the MCU’s Wolverine, and there are quite a few popular candidates for Logan in Marvel’s X-Men reboot.

I Think Hugh Jackman Can Still Play Wolverine For Another Decade

A Recent Major MCU Casting Makes That More Possible

Jackman showed inDeadpool & Wolverinethat he is the definitive version of Wolverine in live-action. While many fans — me included — expected other stars to make cameos as Wolverine variants in the movie,Jackman played pretty much all versions of Logan in the MCU film, save for the Cavillerine. Not only did he do that, but Jackman looked perfectly fitting as each variant, only making it harder to see someone else taking over the role. The only issue there could be with Jackman sticking around in the MCU is the actor’s age.

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for 24 years, starting in 2000’sX-Men.

The Wolverine shadow with a question mark next to Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine

Jackman is 55, and Marvel could want to have a younger actor take over as Wolverine for theMCU’s X-Men movieand beyond. However, age seems to be just a number for Jackman, who is still in incredible shape as Wolverine.Deadpool & Wolverinewas another major showcase of the star’s physicality, with one of the biggest moments of the movie’s climactic ending being the top half of Wolverine’s iconic yellow and blue X-Men costume being ripped to pieces, revealing Jackman’s toned physique.I believe Jackman could remain in pretty good shape until he is 65.

Deadpool & Wolverinealso teased this with jokes about Jackman playing Wolverine until he is 90.

Ryan Reynolds As Deadpool Standing In Cassandra Nova’s Base In Deadpool & Wolverine

Another factor that has me convinced Jackman could be the MCU’s Wolverine for the next decade is a recent MCU casting announcement. After playing Iron Man from 2008 to 2019,Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to the MCU as Doctor Doom. The fact that the actor is 59 and will be the main villain of the next two Avengers movies makes me believe that Marvel Studios could be open to keeping Jackman around in such a major role like Wolverine despite his age.Deadpool & Wolverinealso teased this with jokes about Jackman playing Wolverine until he is 90.

I Can’t Believe We Missed Out On The Best Deadpool & Wolverine Variant But I Know How He Can Join The MCU

The first look at the major variant that was cut from Deadpool & Wolverine reveals what was lost, but there’s a way for him to still come to the MCU.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Success Makes A Major Case For More Hugh Jackman

The Movie Has Become One Of The MCU’s Best

Jackman has more often than not found success in his appearances as Logan, andDeadpool & Wolverinemight just be his biggest yet. The movie broke several records before release, and with many surprises, action, jokes, and emotional character moments,Deadpool & Wolverinehas become one of theMCU’s best moviesand biggest hits. The film is the first sinceSpider-Man: No Way Hometo pass $1 billion at the worldwide box office, withDeadpool & Wolverinenow becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, taking the crown from DC’sJoker.

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has been a bit of a mixed bag, with some extraordinary projects and others that failed to meet expectations.Deadpool & Wolverinemet every expectation I had for it and even exceeded them in a delightful way. The chemistry shared between the two lead characters was the movie’s beating heart, grounding an expansive multiverse story. Based onDeadpool & Wolverine’s success and howthere is a lot of demand for Jackman to come back as the hero, I think Marvel will want to keep the actor around, perhaps with aDeadpool & Wolverinesequel as well.

Deadpool 4: Everything We Know

With Deadpool & Wolverine being the most anticipated movie of 2024, it’s worth looking ahead to if Deadpool will return again for Deadpool 4.

I Want To See Hugh Jackman Fulfill His MCU Avengers Dream

The MCU Can Use Wolverine In Multiple Teams

If Jackman is to continue as the MCU’s Wolverine for the next decade, then I want to see him be used frequently. There is a perfect way for Marvel Studios to make one of the actor’s dreams a reality. Speaking toIGNin 2014,Jackman revealed his dream of playing Wolverine alongside the MCU’s Avengers. After claiming that he would love to see Wolverine with the Avengers, Jackman explained that, saying, “There’s a great dysfunction among that team, and I think Wolverine would fit right into that.” I want to see that happen in the MCU.

In Marvel Comics,Wolverine has served in multiple different Avengers teams. The mutant was even part of the New Avengers at the same time as the X-Men, and with the MCU set to reboot the team in 2026’sAvengers: Doomsday, with the popularity of Reynolds' Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine, I believe there is a chance both could make the cut. Jackman could then have a decade of team-up movies ahead of him in the MCU, pairing up with Reynolds for moreDeadpool & Wolverineentries, as well as appearing in the MCU’s new Avengers and X-Men teams.

I Know The Best Way For RDJ’s Doctor Doom To Bring Back The MCU’s Original Avengers

With Robert Downey Jr. back in the MCU but as Doctor Doom, Marvel could be using a dark story that sees the return of the original Avengers cast.

I Believe Hugh Jackman Can Help Establish The MCU’s Next Wolverine

The Actor Already Has The Perfect Successor In The MCU

While I can see Jackman playing Wolverine for another decade, I think 65 is a nice age to call it quits and usher in a new Wolverine. The best possible way to do that might not be through the casting of a new actor as Logan, but byusing Dafne Keen’s X-23instead. The character is already in the MCU, with Keen reprising her role as Laura fromLoganinDeadpool & Wolverine. At the end of the MCU’s latest movie, X-23 is seen sitting next to Wolverine at Deadpool’s home for the family dinner, hinting at future appearances together.

I would love to see the next decade of MCU stories explore two versions of Wolverine. X-23 could even don her yellow Wolverine costume from the comics and be called Wolverine like Jackman’s. This way, Marvel would deepen the connection between the characters and slowly set the stage for Keen to become the MCU’s one and only Wolverine when Jackman retires from the role. AfterDeadpool & Wolverine’s success and how much fun Jackman has said he had making the movie, I’m positive we will get at least one moreWolverineappearance, but I hope he stays in the MCU.
