Gon Freecs, the beloved main character of the legendaryHunter XHuntermanga, has been absent from the story for a very long time, and fans might wonder what happened to him. With the manga recently returning to serialization, here is what happened to him after the 13th Chairman Election arc.
In the Succession War Arc, Kurapika took over as the protagonist just like he did in the Yorknew Arc, in which he shared this role with Gon. While he is doing a fantastic job and fans are already used to him getting the spotlight, the series will most likely come back to Gon, especially after Togashi confirmed thatone of the endings ofHunter X Hunterwould feature Gon. The series isn’t quite done with him yet, so fans can look forward to his return.

Hunter X Hunter: Everything You Need to Know About The Succession War
The Succession Contest arc is one of the most complicated even by Hunter X Hunter’s standards. Here is everything you need to know.
Gon Has No Place in The Story Anymore
Duringthe Chimera Ant arc, Gon’s rage and hopelessness led him to forfeit his Nen in exchange for an ultimate power that could kill Neferpitou, which he did effortlessly. However, the drawback was the loss of Nenand consequently, he was hospitalized and was on death’s door. It was only through the desperate efforts of Killua and Alluka’s mysterious powers that he became healthy again. However, while his body was restored, his Nen wasn’t and the series seemingly hints that he won’t get it again.
One last time before Gon met his father, Killua, Gon, and Alluka had an adventure together to the World Tree. Killua went his way with his sister, vowing to protect her, and Gon climbed up to meet his father. Before they left, they said their goodbyes and promised to keep in touch and meet again one day. With sorrowful expressions, they parted ways, leading to one of the series' saddest scenes.

As the series progressed, more and more powerful characters were introduced, and more complex powers to boot. While Gon was holding his own in the Chimera Ant arc, he unfortunately lost all his Nen and couldn’t use his abilities anymore, which makes him sadly unsuited for the story. With characters that can see the future or create unstoppable beasts, it makes very little sense for Gon to be involved, given how weak he is, and although he has some of the best athleticism and wit, it still isn’t enough to survive.
There Is Still Hope to See Gon Back in Hunter X Hunter
Gon Could Learn Nen Again From Zero
It is important to note thatGon only lost his Nen, not his aura. Every human who is alive has an aura, and the loss of it means death. This means that he can still relearn Nen again if he so wishes to, and knowing how adventurous Gon is, he just might. Ging, his father, told him exactly this, after he noticed that Gon has essentially come back to being a normal human. Furthermore, the beginning of chapter #354 focuses on Gon’s reactions to the loss of Nen, so it’s very obvious the young boy still has his former powers in his mind.
If Gon were ever to relearn Nen, he would have to do it in the recommended and gradual way. The first time, Wing forced open his and Killua’s pores, which sped up their training, and they were proficient enough to learn most of the basics. Now, Gon has at least the knowledge and experience of a strong Nen user, so his training could be completely different.

How Would Gon Be Reintroduced To The Story?
Fans Will Probably Have to Wait for the End of the Succession War
WhileHunter X Hunteris a very unpredictable story, there are a couple of ways to successfully reintegrate Gon back into the story without messing up the flow. The most obvious one is exploring his new goal.Ging told him to “figure out what you can do as you are now.“This might not be the most action-packed or adventurous way to bring back Gon but it would be very interesting to see our young protagonist ponder life and what he wants to accomplish and use all the knowledge and experiences he has to find it.
However, the most exciting way to bring him back is toexplore his lineage and connection to Don Freecs, the author of the Journey To The New World book, a book that details the Dark Continent Expedition that took place 300 years ago. Ging theorizes Don might still be alive, which is interesting given it suggests he’s immortal or discovered something that extends his lifespan. Gon’s relationship with Don could explain his one-in-a-million potential for Nen, and it could open a path for his eventual return. This would kill two birds with one stone, as it brings him back while also exploring the lore.

Still, as the story currently focuses on the events of the Succession War, and Gon is not present on the Black Whale ship, it’s unlikely he’ll return before that arc ends. There are so many exciting possibilities for Gon and how he would impact the story, so it is interesting if and how he comes back. The series has made more progress than it has in many years so it might not be too long untilHunter X Hunterconfirms whetherGon Freecswill come back to the main story and take up his mantle as the main character.
