WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead forThe Amazing Spider-Man#68
Marvel’slatestSpider-Mansolicitation shockingly suggests the publisher is going to replace the character in his mystical new mission with theX-Men, as the currently-running “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” story looks like it will end with the final death of Spidey, as he attempts to complete the quest assigned to him by Doctor Doom to defeat the Scions of Cytorrak.
Releasing in February of next year,The Amazing Spider-Man#68 continues the“8 Deaths of Spider-Man”story begun in issue #61. The story-arc features Spidey being given a new magic suit that allows him to resurrect himself a total of eight times. Judging from the solicits, it sounds like the web-slinger’s number might be up in the arc’s eighth issue.

THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN CONTINUES! With Spider-Man now DEAD, it’s up to the X-Men to win the day and save the universe. But why are they fighting EACH OTHER?!?!

It perhaps shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that Spider-Man is dying during the story-line given the title of the story-arc, but the wall-crawler only has a set number of lives to accomplish his mission and subdue the Scions of Cytorrak.Doctor Doom even gave Spidey a spiffy new outfitto accomplish his mission, which not only allows the Webslinger to resurrect himself an additional seven times if he dies, but allows him to cast magic web-spells as he takes on his mystical new opponents.
Fans also have to wonder whether more “.DEATHS” issues will be part of the larger story, or if there will be other Marvel heroes picking up the baton.

The X-Men coming in to finish the job Spider-Man started should be an interesting wrinkle to the story, as well, especially since it appears the team will ultimately wind up fighting each other.Cyclops’ new X-Men teammust have fallen under the spell of one of the Scions, but considering Scott Summers hasthe Juggernaut in his team’s ranks, perhaps the Scions didn’t have to push too hard. Fans also have to wonder whether more “.DEATHS” issues will be part of the larger story, or if there will be other Marvel heroes picking up the baton.

Forecasting The Comic Icon’s Inevitable Return
This being comics, readers can also assume thatSpider-Man may not be as permanently dead as it initially appears. The “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” story-line will likely have more twists and turns before all is said and done, especially given how central Doctor Doom will be to the Marvel Universe withnext year’s mega-crossoverOne World Under Doom. Confusing release patterns and ridiculous titles aside, it will still be exciting to see howMarvel’s“The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” wraps up, and how long theX-Menwill be filling in for the supposedly-deceasedSpider-Man.
