Jenny Sparks#2 – written by Tom King, with art by Jeff Spokes – opens with Superman and Sparks having a back-and-forth regarding how to handle theout-of-control Captain Atom, who poses a major threat. Though perhaps the Man of Steel underestimates just how major, until Jenny Sparks clues him in.
While Superman is confident that he and the Justice League can handle Captain Atom, Jenny Sparks seems convinced that Superman and the Justice League rushing in will only lead to the death of the heroes and the hostages.

Jenny Sparksis one of DC’s most exciting new series, featuring a revamp of theoriginal leader of the Authority. The new series offers an interesting perspective on one of the best heroes from the Wildstorm universe. As the “spirit of the 20th century”, Jenny is well past her prime, but so far, the book’screative team has used that to comment on how the last century is still being felt well into the 21st.Captain Atom is also an interesting choice of antagonist, as the über-powerful nuclear hero serves as an apt metaphor for multiple modern-day problems.

Notably, the solicitation forJenny Sparks #2suggests the title character will somehow reckon with the 9/11 attacks. In the originalAuthorityrun by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, Jenny wound up sacrificing herself before the dawn of the new millennium, releasing all the electricity in her body to kill the god-like creator of the Earth itself. Being that this new series is set within a universe where the DC heroes also exist,it’s hard to say how much of the originalAuthoritystory happened, but Jenny’s survival into the 21st century is an intriguing twist to start with.
Whether or not Captain Atom can defeat Superman and the Justice League remains to be seen, but hopefully Jenny Sparks can find a way to handle the situation so the heroes don’t have to find out.
Getting to see Jenny Sparks interact with the classic DC heroes has led to many memorable scenes in the series thus far, not the least because her teammates in the Authority were initially meant to be analogues for the Justice League.A battle between the likes of such characters could be cataclysmic, making the stakes for the story as high as they could possibly be. Whether or not Captain Atom can defeatSupermanand the Justice League remains to be seen, but hopefully Jenny Sparks can find a way to handle the situation so the heroes don’t have to find out.
