A newGodzillacard game is coming out this year. The iconic kaiju Godzilla has found increased popularity in recent years thanks to the Oscar-winningGodzilla: Minus Oneand the popular Hollywood blockbuster Monsterverse movies made by Legendary Pictures. With asequel toGodzilla: Minus Oneon the way and the Monsterverse continuing to chug along, it seems like Godzilla’s stock has never been bigger—which is saying something given that the monster stands over 400 feet tall.

Bushiroadhas announced new details about itsGodzilla Card Game, which was quietly announced late last year. The new card game will be released simultaneously in Japanese and English, with a planned release date of July 2025. The initial game will feature two starter decks and a new booster pack line. While few details have been released in English, the card game features cards that use stills from various movies (ranging from classic Showa-era Godzilla films to more recent movies likeShin Godzilla) and a unique gameplay style that focuses on repelling an opponent’s kaiju while pushing yours to victory.

Everything We Know About The Godzilla Card Game

Players Send Their Kaiju At Opponents While Attempting To Keep Other Monsters At Bay

TheGodzilla Card Gamewill use four different types of cards - Kaiju cards, Battle Cards, Strategy Cards, and Rage Cards. Players attempt to progress their Kaiju card through eight spaces, with opponents trying to keep them at bay using their own cards. As a kaiju advances across the spaces, they destroy their own player’s Battle Cards that stand in their path. It also appears that kaiju cards can be upgraded once defeated. Right now, it’s unclear how Strategy Cards and Rage Cards will come into effect, although some of the cards appear to use movie poster artwork.

10 Most Horrifying Godzilla Movies

As the world’s most famous movie monster, Godzilla has his roots in horror, a genre that his movies have revisited time and again over the decades.

Players win in one of two ways - either their kaiju advances onto their opponent’s battlefield, or they successfully defeat their opponent’s kaiju. More rules will be released in the future and Bushiroad plans to preview theGodzilla Card Gameand several upcoming events, including Anime Expo in the United States. The game will be released in both English and Japan, with Bushiroad announcing that the first “season” of the game will last one year. Assumably, that means that we’ll be getting new expansions to the game at a pace of about once a year.

Our Take: A New Challenge For Godzilla

Godzilla Card Game Faces Increasingly Crowded TCG Field

Godzilla has made several appearances in other trading card games, includingMagic: The GatheringandUniversus. However, this marks the monster’s first dedicated trading card game in several years, especially one that uses a bespoke game system.

I’m disappointed that Bushiroad is using movie stills as card artwork, although I’m hopeful that we’ll get some card treatments or alternative art that will help boost the popularity of the game. TheGodzilla Card Gameis joininga crowded fieldof new TCGs coming out this year, so we’ll see how it fares, especially outside Japan.
