The season was generally well-received by critics and audiences, but some felt that the pacing of the season left much to be desired after all-out war was promised in the season 1 finale.

I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though. TODAY is Zozobra’s day, when we turn away from gloom.

What Are The Problems George RR Martin Is Referring To?

House Of The Dragon Season 2’s Journey To The Screen Was Tumultuous

While it’s unclear what Martin is referring to, there are a few things that he could be referencing. Prior to filming, originalHouse of the Dragonshowrunner Miguel Sapochnik, who also served as a director for several bigGame of Thronesepisodes, exited the series. Reports indicate that it was over disputes concerning his wife’s involvement in the show as a producer. Ryan Condal, anotherGame of Thronesalum, took on showrunning duties solo after Sapochnik’s exit.

Many believe that these behind-the-scenes issues contributed to the less-than-stellar season.

House of the Dragonseason 2’s production also faced challenges. HBO lowered theseason’s episode count from 10 to 8, reportedly due to budget concerns. Then, during filming, the historic 2023 actors and writers strikes began as both parties fought for fair wages and more against the studios.House of the Dragonwas permitted to continue filming, though no writing could take place during filming.

Many believe that these behind-the-scenes issues contributed to the less-than-stellar season. In particular, the budget cuts seem to have led to the lack of a climactic battle at the end of the season. Instead,House of the Dragonportrayed its version ofThe Red Sowingin season 2’s penultimate episode, building up to the Battle of the Gullet, but presumably saving that for season 3.

Whether these are things that Martin will address remains unclear - his problems with the show could be entirely unrelated to these behind-the-scenes issues. WhileHouse of the Dragonhas made changes to the source material,Martin has praised some of those changesin past blog posts. Until Martin makes the promised post, we can only speculate what exactly he is referring to.
