One minor detail makes this wildFourth Wingtheory about Ridoc even more convincing. Many theories and possibilities about the next chapter ofThe Empyrean Serieshave cropped up after thecliffhanger ending ofIron Flameleft audienceswith questions. Most of those theories have centered on Violet and Xaden’s personal and combined arcs, but the other characters have not been ignored.Audiences have posited a variety of theories about the supporting characters, including Imogen, Mira, Sawyer, and surprisingly even Ridoc.

Largely, those theories surrounding Ridoc have not been very positive, as many assume thatRidoc may not surviveOnyx Stormdue to his limited comic role and development. However, one theory onReddithas a different idea of where Ridoc’s story is going, stating that he could actually be bonded to two dragons like Violet, giving him a second signet. Though it is a wild theory, there are several moments and details in the series that could confirm it, including something as simple as the meaning of Ridoc’s dragon’s name.

Aotrom’s Name Makes Fourth Wing’s Wildest Ridoc Theory More Convincing

Aotrom’s Name Defies The Convention Of The Series

The meaning of Aotrom’s name in Scots Gaelic, the language Rebecca Yarros used to name all of the dragons inFourth Wing, makes the wild theory that Ridoc may have a second signet or even a second dragon more convincing. Each ofFourth Wing’s dragonsthroughout the series havenames whose meanings correspond to the signet or disposition of their riders, with some also hinting at the fates of those characters.Examples include Sgaeyl meaning shadow, Codagh meaning war, Tairneanach meaning thunder, and Claidh, Amber Mavis' dragon, meaning cemetery.

Fourth Wing Secretly Hinted At A Major Imogen Twist (& Violet Won’t Be Happy About It)

Fourth Wing’s bonus chapter reveals more about Imogen’s signet and hints at a sinister plot twist to come in Onyx Storm, the next entry in the series.

YetAotrom in Scots Gaelic means light as referring to weight, breaking this clear conventionas Ridoc is an ice wielder and this does not speak to his personality. It does, however, add a piece of evidence to the theory that Ridoc could have a second signet and even another dragon. Aotrom’s name could imply Ridoc is a distance wielder, while his other dragon could ironically have an ice-based name to explain his signet. Of course, this wild theory has other evidence to support it, making it a fun thing to consider as audiences wait forFourth Wing’s next installment.

There’s Other Evidence Ridoc Has A Second Signet (& Maybe A Second Dragon)

Ridoc’s Tattoo And Phrasing Add To This Theory

Alongside of Aotrom’s name, Ridoc’s tattoo and phrasing throughoutIron Flameall point to him potentially having a second signet or even a second dragon, making this a fascinating and strongly plausibleFourth Wingtheory.Ridoc’s tattoo inIron Flameis one of the biggest pieces of evidence for this theory, as Aotrom’s gruff demeanor and its placement so close to his relic are at odds. Not only that, but the book mentions his tattoo multiple times throughout, giving Ridoc more detailed attention than other minor characters.

The theory’s main pieces of evidence can be found in chapters 30 and 49 ofIron Flame.

Another piece of evidence to support thiswild Ridoc theoryis his phrasing in certain scenes.Ridoc’s defensiveness after he shares his fear of snakes and his stating that"The dragons know"inIron Flamepoints to the fact that Ridoc is hiding somethingand that it could be another dragon bond. Ridoc also stated that he"woke up somewhere I hadn’t expected,“which could imply the manifestation of his distance-wielding signet. While this would be a fun twist forFourth Wing,Ridoc does not necessarily need another dragon to make this theory canon.

Ridoc May Not Need Another Dragon To Have A Second Signet In Fourth Wing

Ridoc’s Connection To Aotrom Could Mirror Quinn’s Dragon Bond

Ridoc may not need to have another dragon bond to have a second signet inFourth Wing, as the reveal could be similar to Quinn’s second signet. There are three namedFourth Wingcharacterswho have second signets:Violet due to having two dragons and Xaden and Quinn due to bonding a dragon one of their ancestors bonded to previously. It is more likely Ridoc, if he does have a second signet, would mirror Quinn as her great aunt bonded her dragon, giving her the ability to minorly shapeshift alongside her astral projection signet.

Air manipulation would both fit and comedically explain Ridoc’s line about waking up somewhere else as he could have literally blown himself away.

One of Ridoc’s ancestors could have bonded with Aotrom, explaining why Ridoc has a second signetand why it has taken so long to appear. If that is the case, his second signet would likely match his primary one like Quinn’s, with possibilities including air or water manipulation. Air manipulation would both fit and comedically explain Ridoc’s line about waking up somewhere else as he could have literally blown himself away. Either way, thisFourth Wingtheory is both far too fun not to explore and has far too many pieces to not look into asOnyx Stormdraws closer.
