Following their official return to theMarvel Cinematic UniverseforAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Wars, the Russo brothers go into depth about what was needed for them to make a comeback to Marvel Studios. 2024 marked a big year for Marvel Studios, as not only didDeadpool & Wolverinebecome a smashing success forthe MCU timeline, but Phase 6 is looking stronger and better than ever. AsAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Warsare still happening, the MCU will be having their most successful directors handling the two sequels with the return of the Russo brothers.

In a new interview withGamesRadar,co-director Joe Russo disclosed more on what was required in order for him and his brother Anthony Russo to agree to return to the MCU to helm bothAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Wars. Russo made it clear that having Robert Downey Jr. back was a must-have for their deal to go through, as he shared the following:

Joe Russo: We’re all very close. We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all ofus – so we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story. Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?

What The Russo Brothers' Comments Mean

The MCU has been going through a lot of changes behind the scenes, includingthe firing of Kang actor Jonathan Majors, which led to the shift of using Victor von Doom as the new villain for The Multiverse Saga. This is a massive task for Marvel Studios, as the audience has been waiting nearly two decades to see a proper version of Doctor Doom in live-action. This is also all happening in the midst of the MCU’sFantastic Fourreboot, which makes Victor’s introduction even more crucial forAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Wars.

With the Russos handling theAvengerssequels while also being the filmmakers who will get to bringDoctor Doom into the MCU,hearing that they want to make it memorable and special indicates that they are taking this as seriously as possible. After having tackled something as big asAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame, the stakes are bigger than ever forAvengers: DoomdayandAvengers: Secret Wars, which they are clearly aware of, hence why they needed certain pieces in place before returning. That’s why it will be fascinating to see what kind of"explosive"story they have in mind for these Phase 6 installments.
