Summary
The lack ofStar Warsannouncements at SDCC and D23 was disappointing, but Lucasfilm still has some secrets up its sleeve. For the most part, the bulk of announcements concerning a galaxy far, far away at D23 involved anupcomingStar Warsmovie. Of the three confirmed theatrical projects, thestory ofThe Mandalorian & Groguis furthest along in development, meaning some footage for the 2026 film was shown to audiences, if not released online. The footage highlighted the return ofStar Wars Rebels’Zeb and Din Djarin’s trusty ship, the Razorcrest.
That said, upcomingStar WarsTV showsreceived some focus, however, fromSkeleton CrewtoAndorseason 2. Atrailer forStar Wars:Skeleton Crewwas released to the public and shown at D23’s Disney Entertainment Showcase panel, whileAndorseason 2 was teased for those in attendance at the latter. However, besides providing updates on projects that were already announced, Lucasfilm did not announce anything new. This was undoubtedly disappointing at first, but it remains the cast thattheStar Warsfranchise has some secrets to unveil in the future.

Lucasfilm Is Actively Working On “Secret” Projects
Star Wars Movies & TV Shows Are Being Produced Behind The Scenes
At D23 2024, it was expected that Lucasfilm would announce the studio’s next animated project after the ending ofStar Wars: The Bad Batch. This was supported by the Lucasfilm Animation panel that was held at D23, yet no announcements were provided by the time the panel came to a close. Regardless,it remains the case that Lucasfilm is working on an unannounced animated project due to a recent posting for job opportunities with the studio’s animation team. While D23 would have been a perfect place to announce this, Lucasfilm opted to keep it a secret for now.
WhereStar Warsmovies are concerned, there are some still in development that remain shrouded in mystery. Aside fromThe Mandalorian & Grogu,Rey’s Jedi Order movie, and James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” project, there is aStar Warsmovie in the early stages of development fromDeadpool & Wolverinedirector Shawn Levy. Levy confirmed the project is still ongoing during the press tour for the 2024 Marvel film, meaningStar Warshas another theatrical surprise waiting to be announced even after D23 2024.

Star Wars Simply Isn’t Ready To Announce These Projects Yet
Lucasfilm Is Learning From Past Mistakes
Naturally, questions will be raised over why Lucasfilm did not officially announce another animated project or Levy’sStar Warsfilm at D23. However, it may prove to be a good thing that the studio opted against doing so. The reason for this stems from Lucasfilm’s issues in the past, that being the announcement of various TV shows and movies that did not come to fruition. Since 2019, several projects have been announced, unveiled, and subsequently canned, leading to much disappointment from theStar Warsfanbase.
Rather than announce something that may not play out, the studio is keeping Star Wars projects close to its chest until they are guaranteed to hit screens…

From the TV showRangers of the New Republicto movies like Patty Jenkins’Rogue Squadron,a Kevin Feige-produced film, and a theatrical project fromGame of Thronescreators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, several projects have stalled and been removed from Lucasfilm’s slate.
