Our Take: Another Win For Demon Slayer?

The Sequel Can Rise Above The Original

The originalHinokami Chroniclessold well, shipping over 4 million copies worldwide. But it received mixed reviews, which largely focused on the flaws in its single-player modes. Its more traditional fighting game-style VS. modes were popular with players and reviewers alike, and its visuals and story were praised for being accurate to the anime. Butthe single-player exploratory stages were criticized for being inconsistent, and overly simple, with few secrets to be found beneath the surface. Many reviewers found this ruined the pacing of the story mode, earning it an average of 69 onMetacritic.

The Hinokami Chronicles 2already appears to be building on the original game, with its significantly larger roster and its continuation of the original game’s story. But if it’s going to include similar story sections, it needs to do something to make them meaningfully better. This might just look like more intricate, rewarding level design. Alternatively, these levels could just be tied more closely to the story, making them feel like a more central part of the game’s plot. Even a small change would makeDemon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2that much better.
