Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ultimate Black Panther #10!While a number of Marvel Comics heroes are morally against killing their enemies under any circumstances,Black Pantheris not one of them. He’s not atrigger-happy maniac like the Punisher, but he’s certainly noguilt-ridden hero like Daredevil. Black Panther is a king before he is a superhero, and he will do anything to protect his nation, including kill an enemy when the situation calls for it. And Black Panther’s latest kill justchanged the continuity of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe forever.

In a preview forUltimate Black Panther#10 by Bryan Hill and Carlos Nieto, Black Panther is chasing a man through the street, explosions all around them, knocking the man to the ground. Black Panther stands over him, ready to end his life, but the man isn’t so quick to roll over and die. He pulls out an energy blade, powered by the seemingly divine energy that’s coursing through his body. He goes to strike Black Panther, but T’Challa smashes the energy blade to pieces before driving his hand through the man’s chest, killing him. That man was Moon Knight.

To make the situation even more badass, Black Panther taunts Moon Knight during the attack. When Moon Knight gets knocked down by the explosion, Black Panther teases, “It seems God has fallen”, and when Moon Knight generates his energy blade and lets out a battle cry, Black Panther continues, “God screams”. Finally, after Black Panther pushes his claws through Moon Knight’s chest, he offers one final insult, “And now God is dead”. Black Panther didn’t just want to kill Moon Knight, he wanted to destroy his divine reputation, and he succeeded in doing both.

Why Black Panther Killed Moon Knight in the Ultimate Universe

Black Panther and Moon Knight Have Been Rivals Since the Beginning of the Ultimate Universe

Without any context, the news that Black Panther just brutally murdered Moon Knight in the street is admittedly shocking. These two are famous Marvel Comics superheroes, after all, so why is Black Panther treating his peer so poorly? Well, this isn’t Earth-616 where Black Panther and Moon Knight are on the same side (more or less), this is Earth-6160, where the two are mortal enemies of the highest order.

Moon Knight isn’t Marc Spector in the Ultimate Universe. Instead, the living embodiment of Khonshu himself has taken up the mantle, and this version of Moon Knight is about as far from a hero as one could be. Khonshu (along with Ra) are the rulers of the African territory, as divied-up bythe Maker’s Council. Every corner of the world is accounted for, and this shadow government created by the Maker controls all of it. That is, except for Wakanda, making that nation the one that isn’t under the control of Khonshu and Ra - or the Maker.

Every member of the Maker’s Council in the Ultimate Universe.

That’s why Moon Knight radicalized Wakanda’s neighboring countries to go to war in his name. However, after T’Challa was forced to play Moon Knight’s game and send his country to war against those he wished no harm towards, Black Panther took it upon himself to put an end to all of this once and for all. There was no reason to kill innocent people who were being manipulated by a power-hungry maniac with a god-complex, as the maniac himself was the only one who really needed to die. So, Black Panther made that happen, in truly badass fashion.

How Moon Knight’s Death Changes the Ultimate Universe Forever

Black Panther’s Actions Have Global Repercussions (& That’s a Good Thing)

When Black Panther killed Moon Knight in this preview, he didn’t just protect his nation (and, indeed, all of Africa) from a tyrannical villain, he also upset the Maker’s carefully structured world order. Moon Knight was a member of the Maker’s Council - a prominent member. Now that he’s gone, the power structure has been weakened, leaving the Council vulnerable to losing their African territory to Wakanda. While he doesn’t understand the extent of it quite yet, Black Panther’s murderous actions actually made the entire world a better place.

Every member of the Maker’s Council is pure evil, and they need to be taken out without hesitation or remorse - and Black Panther just did that in spades. Plus, this couldn’t have come at a better time, as other superheroes in the Ultimate Universe are also attacking the Maker’s Council. The Ultimates recently challenged the Hulk, and have been systematically attacking pillars of the Council’s power since the start of the story. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is going after the Kingpin, who is in control of the New York City territory with the backing of the Council.

Black Panther Unlocks Vibranium’s Hidden Powers by Learning Its Greatest Secret (It’s Alive)

The true power of Wakanda’s vibranium is officially revealed in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe as the Black Panther unlocks a massive power boost.

None of the other heroes have been able to kill a member of the Maker’s Council, none except for Black Panther. Indeed,Black Pantherhas killed a major villain in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, thereby changing its continuity forever (and for the better).
