Monica Bellucci Recounts Her Experience Working On Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Tim Burton “Knows How To Create A Beautiful Atmosphere On Set”

Screen Rant: I love Tim’s use of old-school effects in this film. It really makes it feel like such a seamless continuation of the original. Did you have any favorite practical effects or props that he used on the one?

Monica Bellucci: Oh, what I like is that Tim prefers practical effects [more] than CGI, so you really react with real monsters in front of you. For an actor, it’s easier because you’re able to go farther with your fantasy and your imagination. And also he loves to draw, so there are always drawings of characters and situations that he shows to us.

He knows how to create a beautiful atmosphere on set. He’s so precise, and he knows what he wants. He works very fast. And also, he knows how to create situations that are scary, shocking, unpredictable, but also funny and deep and emotional - because what I like about it is the work. His characters have often childlike qualities and, to me, he knows how to create the light in the darkness.

He’s called this a reinvigorating experience. He told us that he was actually going to stop directing films before he went off and madeWednesdayand found this experience really invigorating. Could you sort of sense that from him on set?

Monica Bellucci: What I saw on set was that he was full of energy and joy, and I think this film for Tim is very personal. I think it’s something very important for him, and for me to be a witness to this beautiful atmosphere and to see this synergy and this creative connection between him and all those incredible actors was really so enriching. I’m so happy and so honored to be part of this amazing cast and to enter into Tim’s fantastic, poetic, magical world.

Now that I’m realizing it, there are some thematic similarities between Delores and Corpse Bride. In a lot of ways.

Monica Bellucci: Yeah, but I think it’s so attached to his dreams and his characters. If we look [at] his books, I mean, Delores is there already. There are so many women that are painted that way from him.
