Summary
The third issue ofBatman: Gargoyle of Gothamis set to release this September, and DC Comics has unveiled a new animated trailer to mark the occasion. The Black Label series has been much delayed since its launch in September of last year, but the new trailer for the next issue shows off DC’s confidence thatGargoyle of Gotham#3 will ship without any further delays.
Shared on Instagram viaBatman: Gargoyle of Gotham’s writer/artistRafael Grampá, the trailer’s animation style evokes that of Jamie Hewlett, who provided a rare variant cover for the issue. Being inspired by Hewlett, the trailer also recalls the music videos of the rock band Gorillaz.

Hewlett was a key piece of theGorillaz, creating the bandwith musician Damon Albarn and providing the character designs for each band-member. Although one of the greatest artists to have ever worked in comics,Hewlett has done relatively little in the mainstream superhero worlds of Marvel and DC,which makes his variant cover something special.
Gotham’s Newest Villain Could Finally Destroy DC’s Superheroes - All of Them
Tons of villains have tried to take down Batman and the Justice League, but one new Gotham villain might actually succeed with this unique power.
Variant Cover by Jamie Hewlett
Much like Hewlett, Grampá is another talent whose relatively small body of work has nevertheless resulted in a devoted following. Grampá setting his sights on the Dark Knight by writing and drawing his own series is something to sit up and take notice of, andGargoyle of Gothamhas been an excellent showcasefor his distinctive artwork. Grampá has introduced a number of new villains to the Bat-mythos, such as MOTH-er, the Virgin, Doctorgeist and Crytoon. The dark and twisted line-up of villains is appropriate for the story being told, which sees the Dark Knight abandon his Bruce Wayne identity to become Batman full-time.
Although the third issue has faced significant delays, it looks like Grampá’s Batman series will finally continue this September. Barring any further delays, this will get fans one step close to acomplete Black Label seriesfrom Grampá, despite it beginning in September of 2023. Even though they’ve had to wait, it sounds like fans are in for a satisfying penultimate issue toGrampá’s epic Batman tale. With thesolicitations promising the Dark Knight trapped in the lair of Doctorgeist and fighting for “the soul of Gotham,”readers should be in for an epic showdown that will hopefully be worth the wait.

THE PENULTIMATE ISSUE OF RAFAEL GRAMPÁ’S DC BLACK LABEL MASTERPIECE! “May the hour of the devil begin…” The harrowing journey through the dark heart of Gotham reaches a fever pitch in this penultimate installment of Rafael Grampá’s visionary series! Batman’s investigation leads him into the deadly lair of Doctorgeist — where his presence is not only expected… but welcomed. Their savage fight for the soul of Gotham—and the soul of Bruce Wayne himself — will send shock waves through the city from which it might never recover. And elsewhere, the fugitive Crytoon makes a twisted acquaintance that finally gives him something to smile about…
Once the series is complete, it will bethe longest mainstream work that Rafael Grampá has yet produced for the big two. The writer/artist hasn’t put out a huge body of work since entering the comics field in the 2000s after a career in animation, but Grampá seems to favor quality over quantity. Artwork as intricately beautiful as Grampá’s takes time to produce, so whenever the third issue ofBatman: Gargoyle of Gothamcomes out, it will be cause for celebration — and hopefully live up to the Hewlett-inspired trailer promoting its release.
