The Left Arm Of The Pirate King: One Piece’s Scopper Gaban Explained
Everything To Know About One Piece’s Scopper Gaban
Going back to Buggy’s flashback of the Roger Pirates, Gaban had always been depicted as one of the Roger Pirates’ main fighters, his fighting style involving dual wielding a pair of axes, and in the anime, he held his own against Kozuki Oden, someone with strength relative to Kaido. Scopper Gaban’s few appearances, coupled with the way his name pairs with Gold Roger and Silvers Rayleigh, has had people assuming he was high up in the chain of command, and sure enough,One Piecechapter #1139 confirmed that Scopper Gaban was the left arm of the Pirate King.
In the present, Gaban appeared almost 15 years ago, as he was the mysterious man who shared a drink with Crocus in a cover story. More recently, Gaban had his first proper appearance in chapter #1139, with Rodo introducing him with the nickname “Mr. Ya” and revealing that he was Ripley’s husband and Collun’s father. Gaban, feeling reminded of Roger from watching Luffy, then brought them all to where the key to Loki’s chains was held, but rather than give them the key,Scopper Gaban told Luffy that he would have to fight him if he wanted Loki’s key.

Scopper Gaban’s nickname of “Mr. Ya” is likely derived from the Japanese spelling of his name, which would be more accurately translated as “Scopper Gyaban”.
Is One Piece Secretly Revealing Another Major Character?
One Piece’s Biggest Gaban Theory Explained
The proper reveal of Scopper Gaban is a big moment forOne Piece, and there might be another reason behind that. One notable feature of Gaban’s design is a scar resembling a flame, and as such,Scopper Gaban’s character design as depicted inOne Piecechapter #1139 has people theorizing thatScopper’s the Man with the Burn Scar, the person said to have the last Road Poneglyph. The Roger Pirates are the only people to ever go to Laugh Tale, so if anyone would have the last Road Poneglyph, it would make sense for it to be one of them.
That theory isn’t without its issues, of course. What little is known about the Man with the Burn Scar suggests that they spend a lot of time traveling the world for unknown reasons, and while Gaban hasn’t been living exclusively on Elbaph, as shown by his sharing drinks with Crocus, with Collun still being a child by giant standards, he’s likely spent most of his time on Elbaph helping Ripley raise him.The timeline of Scopper Gaban’s life on Elbaph likely prevents him from being the Man with the Burn Scar, but hopefully, future chapters will more thoroughly clarify things.

One Piece Sets Up Luffy’s Toughest Fight Yet
Why Luffy Vs. Gaban Will Be One Piece’s Biggest Fight
One Piecechapter #1139 ended with Gaban challenging Luffy to a fight over the key to Loki’s chains, and with Gaban being noted as the one person in the Roger Pirates who could stand toe-to-toe with Roger and Rayleigh, two of thestrongest characters inOne Piece, soLuffy’s fight with Scopper Gaban will be Luffy’s first true fight with someone close to Roger’s level. The fact that Gaban treated Luffy defeating Kaido as not being that big a deal further cements how strong he is, and the ensuing fight will surely be appropriately massive in scale.
If the fight withthe Five Elderswas an indication of anything, Luffy still isn’t strong enough to deal with the biggest threats in the world, with Imu likely even above them, so not only will the fight with Gaban truly show where Luffy stands, butLuffy fighting someone like Scopper Gaban can help him get the proper training he needs to be fully prepared for the biggest threats still around inOne Piece. Overall, there’s plenty to be excited about with Scopper Gaban, and whatever he brings toOne Piece’s Elbaph arc will surely be great to behold.
