In an old interview about fun facts relating to the episodes of the originalDigimon Adventureanime, the director, Kakudo, revealed thatTai’s iconic line was not in the first script. To begin with, the leader of the DigiDestined traveling back home was supposed to occur in episode #20, one entry earlier. The reason why this did not occur was because the team began exploring the mysterious nature of the Digital World in episode #19. These delays gave them an idea that could completely change how this enigmatic location was perceived by fans.

Kakudo revealed that the episode was originally going to be directed by Mamoru Hosoda, a talented director who has worked onmany of the incredibleDigimonmovies. His idea involved making Tai travel back in time, arriving at his home on July 25th, 1999. This would shock viewers, as they would see the Digital World as a dimension with rules that could break the laws of physics. Since this idea was retconned by the new version of episode #19, they instead decided to leave the date as August 1st, as it would fit the plot better.

The Leader Seems To Be a Lucky Charm for the Franchise

Although not many fans know this, due to his name being changed outside of Japan, Tai’s full name is Taichi Yagami. This ended up being a huge coincidence, as his name contains the Kanji necessary to write August 1st. Kakudo explained that this was never the intention behind naming the character, as they did not expect that date to become so emblematic of the series. His name can also be read as The Great One Among the Eight, a detail that foreshadowed the decision to include Kari in the original DigiDestined team.

TheDigimonfranchise hides several secrets, many of which fans have yet to discover. It is an incredibly lore-rich series that has managed to surprise audiences even after more than twenty years since its beginning.
