Peter Berg, the executive producer ofAmerican Primeval, has addressed whether the show could return for season 2. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Shawnee Pourier, and Derek Hinkey,American Primevalexplores the challenges of frontier life in mid-19th century America, particularly those of the growing Mormon community in the Utah Territory and the local Native American tribes. Written and created by Mark L. Smith,American Primevalhas scored mixed reviewsfrom critics, but largely positive reviews from audiences.
In a recent interview withDecider, Berg shared his thoughts on the future ofAmerican Primeval. While he expressed affection for the characters and the crew, he acknowledged that the filming conditions were extreme. Despite the challenges, Berg hinted that the show could return if certain criteria are met, including better weather and the willingness of Julie O’Keefe, the show’s Indigenous Consultant. However, Berg also made it clearthat production arrangements would play a major role in any kind of renewal.Check out his comments below:

Peter Berg: You know, after we wrapped, and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt such affection for them. And I do think there are many ways that we could go. I’ve still got to thaw out from my time spent up on those mountains in the winter, but maybe if they got to lower ground, that wasn’t quite as cold, we could. We could go back. If [Indigenous Consultant] Julie [O’Keefe] will come back, I’d be up for discussing it.
Julie O’Keefe:As long as I don’t have to have ice cleats again, I definitely will come back.

What This Means For American Primeval’s Future
The Cast & Crew’s Safety Comes First, Along With Story Accuracy
IfAmerican Primevalcontinues, it will likely center on the characters who survived in season 1. Due toIsaac’s sacrifice in the final episode, characters like Sara, Devin, and Two Moons are now poised to lead the story. The potential for more character development and exploration of new survival challenges provides a strong foundation for a season 2, particularly as the former two continue their journey to find Sara’s husband.
Moreover, production challenges, including the frigid temperatures during filming, would need to be addressed for anAmerican Primevalseason 2 to move forward. Adjustments to the filming locations and conditionswill be necessary to ensure the comfort and safety of the cast and crew. This change could entail finding more manageable environments while maintaining the show’s rugged tone.
Most importantly, O’Keefe’s return as the Indigenous Consultant is crucial forAmerican Primeval’saccuracy. Her involvement ensures that the portrayal of Indigenous peoples remains culturally accurate and respectful. If O’Keefe is not available for season 2, the show could facedifficulties in maintaining the cultural integrity that was included in season 1.
