Summary

Alice in Borderland’s most underrated characters made the show better despite their relatively short screen time, but they cannot return in season 3 without ruining Arisu’s character development. Following an intense finale in which the true nature of the Borderland was revealed,Alice in Borderlandwas renewed for season 3. While the series has been successful for Netflix since its debut in 2020, the season 3 renewal was surprising given howAlice in Borderlandseason 2 ended.Haro Aso’s manga ends with Arisu waking up in the real worldjust like season 2 did.

Therefore,Alice in Borderlandwon’t have the source material to pull from and is expected to be an original story. So far,Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya are currently the only actors confirmed to return in season 3, which does not have a release date. Arisu and Usagi areAlice in Borderland’s main characters, but the show also features several supporting names that are as interesting as the leads, if not more. This includes Chota and Karube, although they should ideally not return in season 3 at the risk of ruining Arisu’s character development.

I Have Mixed Feelings About Alice In Borderland Season 3 After 2 Great Seasons

Alice in Borderland was surprisingly renewed for season 3 despite season 2’s perfect ending, and I have mixed feelings about the show’s future.

Chota & Karube Returning In Alice in Borderland Wouldn’t Make Sense After Arisu’s Character Arc

Chota & Karube Helped Arisu In Every Step Of The Way

The deaths of Chota and Karube inAlice in Borderlandseason 1, episode 3 set the tone for the rest of the show. Arisu and his friends entered theSeven of Hearts game, only to realize only one of them was going to come out of it alive. Designed by the Queen of Hearts herself, the Seven of Hearts was a twisted take on hide-and-seekthat, at first, seemed like it was being played in reverse. However, at the end of the game, Arisu’s friends were hiding from him so that he would be the one to survive.

Keita Machida

Daikichi Karube

Chota and Karube sacrificed themselvesso that Arisu, their best friend, could live.Their deaths meant that Arisu would now have to value his life, almost as if he were living for the three of them. Arisu struggled a lot during the rest of the series, but every time he considered giving up, he would remind himself of what Chota and Karube did through visions and flashbacks. The problem is that Arisu already beat the ultimate game – he chose to live at the end and returned to the real world after an emotional conversation with Chota and Karube.

Several fan theories have tried to find a way Arisu, Chota, and Karube could have beaten the Seven of Hears without any deaths, but none of them was even confirmed by the author.

Alice in Borderland’s Arisu Challenge Is Why Season 3 Is So Risky

It would be redundant to have Arisu seeing visions of Chota and Karube yet again now that he has proven over and over he wants to live. This is part of a larger problemAlice in Borderlandseason 3 faces – the show already had a perfect ending.

Arisu declined to stay in the Borderland, choosing to honor his friends by making the most of his life in the real world. I hope the show doesn’t undo Arisu’s character development to justify a new season, even if that means Chota and Karube never appear again.
