Summary
The first batch of episodes fromNCIS: Sydneyhas filled me with high expectations for the show’s second season. Thespinoff is the first show intheNCISfranchiseto take place outside the United States. The new location allows the show to create interesting storylines that would not be possible in a domesticNCISseries.
The series is an exciting addition to theNCISfranchise and features a team of well-rounded characters. Season 1 also features a series of dramatic storylines and plot twists thatNCISis known for. The first season has made me excited aboutNCIS: Sydneyseason 2because it has opened up several stories through its short eight-episode run. Whilethe plot possibilities forNCIS: Sydneyseason 2are endless, there are a few I am particularly looking forward to seeing.

NCIS: Sydney Cast & Character Guide
As NCIS ventures Down Under with NCIS: Sydney, the spinoff boasts a diverse cast of seasoned veterans and rising TV stars from Australia.
8JD’s Expanded Role In His Family After The Kidnapping Scare
The Kidnapping Will Likely Make JD More Protective
TheNCIS: Sydneyseason finale revealed JD’s son was kidnappedby a wanted felon for the exchange of the season’s villain, Ana Niemus. A previous episode had revealed that JD had a son but not much else was known about his family life other than that he was in the middle of a divorce.NCISshows are known for focusing on police work rather than the personal lives of the team members, but the integration of JD’s son into the case made the stakes so much higher for the team.
What I want to see for JD inNCIS: Sydneyseason 2 is an expanded role in his family. NCIS Special Agents do not have much time for a personal life given their tense workload, but given the scare that JD had regarding the kidnapping of his son, Jack,I would like to see JD make more of an effort to be in his son’s life. He clearly cares very much about Jack, and it was clear in the season finale that the guilt of the kidnapping was weighing heavily on JD since he was not there to stop it.

7Bluebird, Mackey, And Evie Spending Time Together Outside Of Work
They Could Befriend Each Other Outside Of Work
WhenNCIS: Sydneyfirst started, Mackey did not get along well with her teammates, particularly JD, but she also did not get along with Bluebird, the show’s quirky forensic scientist. TheNCIS: Sydneymain charactersall have their own personalities and skills, but over time, the series has shown the characters warming up to each other. It would be nice to see this continue into season 2, especially with Mackey, Evie, and Bluebird.
Episode 7, “Bunker Down,” showed the three characters working and spending time together. And even though it was for a case, it did show how the three agents can work with each other’s strengths and personalities. I would like to see more interactions with the three of them in the mornings before the investigations begin or at the end when the cases wrap up.Evie, Mackey, and Bluebird are all well-rounded characters with their own motivations, and it is nice to see how the three interact, given how different they are from one another.

6A Look Into Mackey’s Mysterious Past
Mackey Holds Her Secrets Close To Her
Mackey is the lead Special Agent of the NCIS and AFP task force ofNCIS: Sydneyand it is clear from the first episode of the series that she holds her secrets close to her. From her interactions with her team, she is very guarded and composed. Her composure is likely why she had trouble getting along with Bluebird at the beginning, because she and Blue are complete opposites.Mackey’s guarded personality also hints at a mysterious past.
Episode 4, “Ghosted,” offers a brief revealinto Mackey’s tragic past. While interrogating a murder suspect, Mackey uses her experience in the Marines to connect to the suspect and help him open up to her. Not much else is known about Mackey’s personal life, but from her short dialogue in the scene, it is clear that what she saw while on tour weighs on her heavily. I only hope thatNCIS: Sydneyseason 2 expands on Mackey’s past and helps unravel her guarded exterior.

I Can’t Believe NCIS: Sydney Will Replace This Longstanding Police Procedural
I can’t believe NCIS: Sydney will replace this CBS police procedural giant in the mid-season fall TV schedule, especially after 14 years on air.
5A Crossover With NCIS
It Has Happened Before With Spin-Offs
A crossover withNCISor its other spin-offs would be an exciting addition toNCIS: Sydney. While a crossover withNCIS: Sydneyseems impossible given its location, it can happen through video calls or international trips. The show’s creator, Morgan O’Neill, has even spoken out and said to “never say never"regarding anNCISfranchisecrossover. PreviousNCISspin-offs have had successful crossovers, setting the precedent for future spin-offs to do the same thing.
If a physical crossover is not possible, then even a crossover through video call, mail correspondence, or name-dropping would be a fun way to add Easter eggs to long-time viewers of the series.
Crossovers are not limited to physically being in the same location either. The Special Agent-In-Charage of theNCIS: Sydneyunit, Ken Carter, has appeared via video calls to Mackey and JD. The director ofNCIS, Leon Vance, has also been mentioned by name. If a physical crossover is not possible, then even a crossover through video call, mail correspondence, or name-dropping would be a fun way to add Easter eggs to long-time viewers of the series.A crossover would also help connect the franchise, since the Sydney location adds distance to the other series.
4JD And Mackey’s Developed Friendship
The Two Are Starting To Get Along
Something else that would be great to see inNCIS: Sydneyseason 2is a more developed friendship between Mackey and JD. The show starts with them not getting along well and arguing about who is the better fit to be the team lead of the combined task force. With Mackey’s guarded personality, it takes a while for them to warm up to each other.By the end of the season, it seems as though the two have developed a trusting relationship, but it would be nice to see this expand in season 2.
Season 1 reveals JD’s family history and one way that the show could expand on Mackey and JD’s friendship is if season 2 shows Mackey revealing her family history to JD. It would show that a bond has been built between the two of them. Seeing as the team often works together under dangerous circumstances,a trusting relationship between Mackey and JD would help strengthen the team, as characters need to trust their teammates in order to survive during distressing situations.
3DeShawn And Evie Relationship
The Romance Has Already Been Hinted At In Season 1
NCIS: Sydneyhas shown a growing relationship between Special Agents DeShawn and Evie. While there have not been any big moments yet, the two often casually flirt with each other in a charming manner, making me excited about what could happen in season 2.Their relationship also has similarities to Tony and Ziva’s relationshipin the earlier seasons ofNCIS. There is a question of whether the two will actually get together, or if they will just keep casually flirting.
The biggest moment forEvie and DeShawn’s romancewas in episode 7, “Bunker Down,” when Evie thought she would run out of air and die in a bunker, so she created a voice note for DeShawn to find. However, after being saved, Evie deletes the voice note and does not mention it to DeShawn. The secrecy surrounding the voice note as well astheir will-they-won’t-they relationship hints at a possible relationshipin future seasons.
NCIS: Sydney Season 2 Makes Me Hopeful That A 20-Year-Old NCIS Tradition Will Return
A growing relationship between two key characters in NCIS: Sydney makes me excited about the possibility of the return of a 20-year-old NCIS trend.
2NCIS: Sydney Needs A New Villain
Season 2 Needs A Replacement For Ana Niemus
NCIS: Sydneyhad something that was quite unusual for theNCISfranchise; it had a season villain. Typically,NCISepisodes are self-contained, with each episode following a separate procedural case. While there are exceptions, the franchise usually follows the typical procedural format. However, season 1 ofNCIS: Sydneyhad a consistent antagonist. Ana Niemus was first introduced as a mysterious suspect in episode 1, “Gone Fission.” The team was not able to catch her then, but she did reappear in the last two episodes of the season and played a major role in the finale.
Ana escapes in the season finale after saving JD and his son Jack from being killed by Yaroslav, Ana’s colleague. Her mercy and exit show that this will not be the last time that she appears inNCIS: Sydney. It also opens up a spot for a new villain in season 2.Having an overarching story in the background ofNCIScases pulls the season togetherand offers hints about what the finale might involve. While I hope that Ana comes back sometime soon, I think season 2 should introduce a new villain.
1Rankin’s Role Explained
The Director Potentially Poses The Biggest Threat To The Team
TheNCIS: Sydneyseason 1 finale reveals a massive plot twist. The finale shows JD bluffing an exchange of a wanted felon, Ana, for his kidnapped son, Jack. While JD is attempting the exchange in front of Yaroslav, his son’s kidnapper, the team watches through CIA satellite resources provided by Rankin, the team’s director. In a shocking twist, Ana kills Yaroslav and frees JD and Jack before she passes Yaroslav’s phone to JD and tells him to “phone a friend.” As JD calls the only number on Yaroslav’s phone, Rankin’s phone starts ringing.
The finale implies a connection between Rankin andNCIS: Sydney’s biggest villains. The most shocking parts are that Rankin supplied the CIA satellite resources to help find JD and his son and that Rankin was the one who encouraged Ana’s exchange for Jack. If he had not helped the team with locating Jack, his connection to Yaroslav would likely have never been uncovered. Currently, it seems like Rankin poses the biggest threat to theNCIS: Sydneyteam.
